Recruiting a Work Experience Student

To hire a Work Experience Student:

Please contact our Co-op Student Services and Administrative Assistant, 416-415-5000 ext. 2143, coopinfo@georgebrown.ca. We will be asking for a job description that outlines the type of work, skills and qualifications required, any other expectations you may have and an overview of your organization. Additional information such as hours worked, compensation, etc. will also be requested. The more detailed the job description, the greater your chance of attracting the best student for the job.

We'll take it from there

Once we receive your complete Invitation to Recruit, we'll review it to confirm its suitability for our programs. If suitable, we will post the job for students to review and send you applications from eligible students for your review. You then select the students you wish to interview. Based on your interview availability, we will then make all the arrangements with the students. Interviews can be held at your offices or at George Brown College, whichever is more convenient for you.

Once you have made your selection, we will offer the position to the student of your choice. Offers should be made and accepted in writing (i.e. via e-mail). Please note, the student must confirm acceptance of your offer within 24 hours, also in writing. We will notify you by telephone or email of the student's acceptance. If the student declines, we will offer the job to your second choice unless you indicate you would like to interview other students.

After the selection process is completed, the student will contact you directly to confirm details of employment, such as the start date, office location, and dress code. You will receive a Work Term Agreement form by the time the student begins their work term. This will serve as documentation required to claim an Ontario Co-operative Education Tax Credit.

During the work term, a Co-op Officer will contact you to arrange a convenient time to speak with you and the student about their progress, answer any questions on the Work Experience Program and talk to the student about their work term experience. The Co-op Officer will also discuss the end-of-term Employer Evaluation Form that is required for employers to fill out for students to get credit for their work term. This may be an in-person visit, a telephone call, or an email exchange.
