All post-secondary institutions in Ontario must ensure that students with disabilities are provided full access to the learning environment with respect and dignity. This requirement is legislated by the Ontario Human Rights Code and the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA). 

George Brown College’s mission and value statements promote an inclusive environment for diverse learners. Employees are required to participate in training on human rights and accessibility. The Office of Anti-Racism, Equity & Human Rights Services (OAREHRS) provides training through Cornerstone for all employees. 

Accessible Learning Services (ALS) is responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of students’ private medical information, assisting students in determining appropriate accommodations, creating a student accommodation plan sent out to faculty and engaging with faculty and the larger college community around implementing student accommodations. 

Faculty responsibilities

Faculty are responsible for participating in the accommodation process, including considering accommodation requests, carrying out specific accommodations for students with disabilities, being knowledgeable about and sensitive to disability issues, and maintaining student confidentiality. 

A student with a disability is responsible for notifying the college of the need for accommodation by registering with ALS and providing documentation confirming disability, participating in discussions regarding possible accommodation solutions, meeting curriculum standards once accommodation is provided, and working with us on an ongoing basis to manage the accommodation process.
