George Brown College students have an opportunity to participate in a variety competitions showcasing their skills, gaining valuable real-world experience and building their professional network.
Remix
For the second year in a row, George Brown College's Fashion Techniques and Design students have been chosen as National winners of the Remix - Canada competition. Iris Alibali advanced as the top ten finalists and was chosen to represent Canada on an international stage in Milan in February, 2017.
The 2018 first prize winner is Helen Yan with her incredible garments inspired by nature and the Tibetan culture. Helen gracefully blends different colours and furs, silver fox fur, coyote, black beaver and raccoon furs, in elegant and unexpected patterns and combinations.
Creativ Catwalk
The George Brown College School of Fashion & Jewellery team won first place at the 2015 Creativ Catwalk competition at the Creativ Festival. Students competed with teams from other colleges to complete a fashion challenge with only three days and $200 to spend on the show floor. The final garment was completely designed, constructed and finished at the festival and shown on the runway. Congratulations for an amazing effort to George Brown team members: Roell Gomes, Shaoquig Guo, and Jinkyung Kim and faculty mentor, Carolyn Perry-Donnan. Our model was another fashion student Kira Oliver. The winning dress featured self-fabric made from layers of tulle, net and lace, rabbit fur trim, a jacket with chenille knit sleeves, and Swarovski crystals.
White Cashmere Collection
Lesley Hampton and Juwyriya Hersi, Fashion Techniques and Design graduates, were among the top 16 finalists in White Cashmere Collection™ in 2017. This competition is a part of an initiative to support breast cancer awareness and fundraising organized by Cashmere Bathroom Tissue. It recognizes the rising Canadian fashion talent and aids the designers in reaching their dreams.
For her garment, Lesley was inspired by her First Nation heritage and the jingle dress that Native Americans wear for a healing dance during pow wow ceremonies. For Juwyriya, the idea for her creation came from the magnificent Canadian winters with sun ricocheting off icy trees.
American Apparel and Footwear Association Case Study
The Fashion Management program is the only academic program curriculum in Canada identified by the American Apparel and Footwear Association (AAFA) as an affiliate school. In partnership with YMA, it offers Fashion Scholarship Fund case study dedicated to encouraging inspiring young professionals to pursue a career in fashion industry.
