School of Design Field Education Workflow by Program of Study

At the School of Design, the Field Education workflow depends on the program of study. Students must adhere to the following steps to ensure you are successful in securing and registering for a work term.

Bachelor of Digital Experience Design (G301)

Step 1: Attend your Professional Practice (BDES 3505) course in Semester 5 to ensure your resume, cover letter, and portfolio are up to industry standards.

Step 2a: Students are granted access to GBCareers (a.k.a. Outcome). Download the manual in PDF format (coming soon). In GBCareers, there are 2 steps to complete:

  1. Terms & Conditions –read carefully to understand the Field Placement policies
  2. Field Education Search – new job postings will be published regularly as they are received from employers. Students are responsible for checking GBCareers daily as postings expire within one to two weeks of publication.

Step 2b: Students are expected to search for job opportunities on their own in addition to applying for jobs posted on GBCareers.

Step 3: Once you have secured a co-op position, complete the following steps:

  1. Submit this form: SoD Confirmed Co-op Placement Details.
  2. Email tkienitz@georgebrown.ca a copy of the job description if you found the position outside of GBCareers.

Step 4: Work Term Agreement forms will be sent to you upon confirmation of your placement details. Forms must be signed by you and the employer prior to the start of your placement.

Step 5: Put your best foot forward at your co-op placement and contact the Field Education Office for any questions or concerns.

Step 6: At the end of your Co-op:

  1. You will submit a final Reflection Assignment, which accounts for 50% of your final grade.
  2. The Field Education Office will contact your employer to obtain the Employer Evaluation, which accounts for 50% of your final grade.
Bachelor of Brand Design (G304)

Step 1: Attend your Professional Practice (BDES 3609) course in Semester 6 to ensure your resume, cover letter, and portfolio are up to industry standards.

Step 2a: Students are granted access to GBCareers (a.k.a. Outcome). Download the manual in PDF format (coming soon). In GBCareers, there are 2 steps to complete:

  1. Terms & Conditions –read carefully to understand the Field Placement policies

Design Management (G401)

Step 1: Attend your Design Business Communications (COMM 1152) course in Semester 1 to ensure your application package (resume, cover letter, and portfolio) meets industry standards. Your application package should be completed by October.

Step 2: Complete the Resume Prep Series set up by GBCareers, which includes an introduction on applying to positions in Canada. To be completed between September – October.

Step 3: Apply for Internship positions between October - January:

  1. The Field Education Office (FEO) solicits for internship opportunities amongst our top employers. Students will be invited for an interview depending on the needs of the employers.
  2. Students are expected to conduct a self-directed job search on top of available opportunities through the FEO. Internships must align to the academic program and approved by the FEO.
  3. The FEO has a partnership agreement with the Brookfield Sustainability Institute to host students on a Work Integrated Project if an external internship opportunity is not found by the student.

Step 4: Once you have secured an internship, complete the following steps:

  1. Submit this form: SoD Confirmed Placement Details.
  2. Email tkienitz@georgebrown.ca  a copy of the job description if you found the position outside of the opportunities from the FEO.

Step 5: Work Term Agreement forms will be sent to you upon confirmation of your placement details. Forms must be signed by you and the employer prior to the start of your placement.

Step 6: Put your best foot forward at your co-op placement, typically between March – May. You must adhere to the Field Education Student Conduct Guide during your placement. Contact the Field Education Office for any questions or concerns.

Step 7: At the end of your Internship Placement:

  1. You will submit a final Reflection Assignment, which accounts for 50% of your final grade. To be completed in May.
  2. The FEO will contact your employer to obtain the Employer Evaluation, which accounts for 50% of your final grade.
Graphic Design (G102)

Step 1: Attend your Professional Practice (GRAF 3014) course in Semester 5 to ensure your resume, cover letter, and portfolio are up to industry standards.

Web Development – Front-End Design (G418)

IMPORTANT NOTE: Students are pre-registered for the Work Integrated Project course in semester 3. Students who successfully obtain a Field Placement position will be registered manually by the Field Education Office. When web registration opens on STU-VIEW for the third semester, students must make a payment of $500.

Step 1: Attend your Industry Employment and Portfolio (DESN 3039) course in Semester 2 to ensure your resume, cover letter, and portfolio are up to industry standards.
