Terms and Conditions

At the Centre for Arts, Design & Information Technology, we strive to maintain positive relationships with our employers who recruit for Field Placement opportunities. Part of this relationship requires students to conduct themselves in a professional manner. The following Terms and Conditions must be adhered as a student participating in Field Education.

School of Computer Technology

At the School of Computer Technology, we use the GBCareers Field Education online system for posting and administering School of Computer Technology approved co-op positions. Students should log into GBCareers daily to check for new job postings.

Students must have an active George Brown College email address to receive communication about co-op positions, interview scheduling, and to communicate with the Field Education Office and employers. Emails should be checked daily, before and during the co-op work term (including holidays, weekends, exam time and intersession week).

We recommend students respond to Field Education Office and employer emails within 24 hours (one business day).

Self-Directed Co-op Job Search

Self-Directed co-op positions must align to your academic program outcomes. If you are unsure a job posting is aligned to your program, follow the steps below:

  1. From the job posting, highlight the sections where you believe it aligns to your program outcomes.
  2. Email Tyanne Fluke tyanne.fluke@georgebrown.ca the above information

Please note: If a role clearly algins with your academic program outcomes, you do not need to complete this step. Ex. Information Systems Business Analysis students can openly apply to Analyst positions, as these opportunities are generally aligned to the program outcomes.

Job Acceptance Guidelines

Students are to refer to the employer's instructions for job acceptance protocols and response time. If directions are not provided, the School of Computer Technology Field Education Office recommends a response time of 24-48 hours to accept a job offer from an employer.

Students who accept a co-op position in writing have made a commitment to work with that employer for the scheduled co-op work term. If a student resigns from a work term position, the student will face academic penalty.

School of Design

At the School of Design, we use the GBCareers Field Education online system for posting and administering School of Design approved Field Education positions. Students should log into GBCareers daily to check for new job postings.

Students must have an active George Brown College email and access to a phone with voice mail to receive communication about job postings, interview scheduling, etc. Email and voicemail must be checked daily, before and during the work term (including holidays, exam time and intersession week).

Students will return Field Education Office staff phone calls or email within 24 hours (one business day).

Job Search and Work Term

Students must apply to a minimum of 5 job postings. Students are also expected to conduct a self-directed search to find job postings outside of the ones listed on GBCareers.

Self-Directed positions must align to your academic curriculum. If students are unsure if a job position is aligned, contact Theresa Kienitz, Field Education Coordinator, tkienitz@georgebrown.ca.

Students who accept a work term position either verbally or in writing have made a commitment to work with that employer for the scheduled work term. If a student quits a work term position, the student will receive academic penalty for the placement.

Job acceptance and interviews

Students have 72 hours (three business days) to accept or decline a job offer from an organization. Once an offer is accepted, the student has committed to completing the work term with that organization.

Students cannot decline a work term offer after accepting the position either verbally or in writing (including email). Once students have accepted a work term opportunity available through GBC Field Education, verbally or in writing, they cannot decline that position to accept another position.

Once students accept a job offer, they must refrain from continuing to interview for other job positions. Students must inform the Field Education Office of upcoming interviews that need to be cancelled.

Navigating your employment contract

Students take full responsibility when negotiating and signing the employment contract offered by the employer.

For paid and unpaid with honourarium positions, the student will work directly with the employer to receive compensation.
