How game worlds are helping health-care workers practise compassionate clinical responses

A game world is a fantasy universe based on a story and a theme. In learning contexts, such as in schools or professional continuing education, game worlds permit us to teach complex subjects in an engaging way by rehearsing competencies and roles in a fictional narrative. But games also invite game users into contemplation. In the work of some researchers, contemplative learning is learning that enables deeper engagement by including elements from the learner’s world that enhance the educational context. David Chandross receives funding from Baycrest Health Sciences as part of an E Campus grant connecting Ryerson University, Baycrest Health Sciences, George Brown College and Centennial College.

Students win gold and silver at Skills Canada competition

George Brown College (GBC) Chef School students earned top honours on the national stage, winning gold and silver medals at the 2024 Skills Canada Competition in Québec City on May 30 and 31. Negus King from the Honours Bachelor of Commerce (Culinary Management) program won gold in the Cooking competition. Sabina Lee from the Baking and Pastry Arts Management program won silver in the Baking category. In addition to his gold medal, Negus also received the Best of Region Award, which was presented to the top-performing competitor from each province. He was the highest-marked competitor from Team Ontario.

Mass timber design showcased in big and small-scale education projects

Mass timber is making strides in the educational space with two new projects in Vancouver and Toronto. Acton Ostry Architects associate principal Milos Begovic presented the Here to Stay: Educational Projects in Mass Timber session during the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada’s annual conference held in Vancouver. Begovic highlighted innovative wood-based construction at both the Little Flower Academy, a Catholic girl’s school in Vancouver, and the Limberlost Place project in Toronto, a 10-storey building on the George Brown College campus.

George Brown College (GBC) has partnered with Cookin, Toronto’s premier food-delivery marketplace, to create the George Brown Student Startup program. Through scholarships, mentorship and business programs, the startup program empowers emerging culinary talents at GBC and nurtures a new generation of culinary entrepreneurs. Seven GBC students and alums have been selected to embark on their journey into online restaurant entrepreneurship. Guided by chef John Higgins through a month-long competitive application process, these up-and-coming food creators have curated unique brands and menus for consumers across Toronto.
