Students creating a sense of community on TikTok

social media ambassador Fiorella Fuenmayor

Since Fall 2020, our student social media ambassadors have been creating fun, short-form videos that help support and engage their peers on TikTok, George Brown’s newest social media channel.

“As a channel, TikTok provided an exciting opportunity to further humanize the George Brown College brand through the voices and ideas of our student social media ambassadors,” said Nicole Zikovitz, Social Media Content Creator. “With the help of our social media ambassador team, we’re able to ideate and share authentic on-trend video content that our student community relates to.”

TikTok was launched during the pandemic to be a student-led, student-focused platform sharing helpful tips, college resources and more. Our social media ambassadors – the stars of our TikTok videos – hope to bring some joy to our community at a time when a little humour and a friendly face can go a long way. They created a “this or that” video about the realities of student life that generated over 17,000 views in just 48 hours when shared across GBC social media channels.

“I think this [TikTok] is a perfect way for students to know and feel they are not alone in their college journey, even when we are apart and cannot be together on campus,” said Fiorella Fuenmayor, one of our ambassadors. “Online learning has unique challenges that affect us all in different ways, and seeing how other students navigate through this new way of learning helps them feel motivated and creates a sense of belonging.”

George Brown was one of the first GTA colleges on TikTok. The success of our student-created videos has helped to grow our community within TikTok and across GBC’s social media channels, providing a valuable learning experience for our students who learned about everything from content creation to analyzing social media data and measuring impact.

“As a marketing student, I learned many technical things from using TikTok for George Brown, but the best part was connecting with the student community. Learning how to convert the trendy content of TikTok and transforming it into something GBC students could relate to was a fun challenge.”
