Important Work Term Dates

  • Start/end dates for work terms – work terms typically begin on the first day of the semester and finish on the last day. Paid work terms may finish before the end of the semester. Exceptions to work term start and end dates may be granted depending on individual circumstances. Please contact your Co-op Officer before starting a work term if you wish to discuss an exception to the start and/or end date.
  • Deadline to register for work term – this date changes per semester and is the same date as the last day to add a course to your schedule in George Brown College’s important dates.

  • Deadline to register for Academic Work Term – typically the same deadline as registering for a work term. For more information, please see your Program Chair.

How to register for your work term

Postgraduate Certificate Students

  • Log on to your Stu-View account and register for the Work Experience Term course once your registration window opens.
  • For paid Work Terms register for COOP 400X
  • For honorarium and unpaid Work Terms register for INTN 400X
  • You must have secured an approved work term job before you register

Degree & Advanced Diploma Students

  • Email coopinfo@georgebrown.ca to register for your Work Experience Term once registration for the term opens.
  • You must have secured an approved work term job in order to register

Note: you and your employer must complete ALL sections/fields before uploading the forms to GBCareers for your Co-op officer’s approval and signature. Your co-op officer’s signature is the LAST addition.

Work Integrated Learning (WIL) Clinic Placement During COVID-19 (Student)

  • Acknowledgement/consent that student is willing to participate and take responsibility for their health in WIL placement.

Work Term "Workflow" How To

On GBCareers, your work term has a series of steps you must complete. Please contact coopinfo@georgebrown.ca for the manual and review it carefully for detailed descriptions of the steps below. You can only complete one step at a time. Your co-op officer will review each step as you complete it and will approve each step in order for you to proceed to the next step.

  • Step 1: Terms and Conditions – Read and click “accept”
  • Step 2: Resume and Cover letter review: upload documents
  • Step 3: Search for jobs or submit a job for approval
  • Step 4: Placement Documents
    • Work Term Start Up Document to be completed prior to starting work term. Note – ensure all areas requiring a signature from you and your employer are signed before uploading it.

    • GBC – Student's Guiding Document for WIL During Covid-19
    • GBC – Employer Acknowledgement of Compliance During Covid-19
    • WSIB Declaration (for unpaid or unpaid with honorarium positions)
  • Step 5: Learning Objectives
    • Needs to be completed and submitted by end of the first week of placement
  • Step 6: Industry Partner Evaluation
  • Step 7: Student Evaluation
  • Step 8: Record and Verify Hours

Tips for a successful work term

Before you start

  • Submit Required Work Experience forms
  • Review written offer for deliverables (this will help guide your learning objectives)
  • Confirm start date, hours of work and dress code
  • Confirm who you report to and how on your first day
  • Purchase new clothes if needed
  • Create a budget if needed

On the job

  • Expect a learning curve
  • Observe and ask
  • Be confident…but not arrogant!
  • Be thorough and conscientious
  • Be organized
  • Stay positive
  • Be the best professional you can be each day

How to succeed

  • Be proactive and avoid being reactive
