How Field Education Works

Students are available for field placements and co-op work terms (part-time or full-time) depending on their program of study. See our typical hiring dates for each work term below.

Please note: Students are available for work placement opportunities during different work terms and their required hours may differ based on their registered program of study. Game-Art – Advanced Diploma

Program Overview

The Game-Art Advanced Diploma program focuses on the principles and techniques of video game art creation required to break into the industry. Students develop 2D and 3D artistic abilities by learning concept art, sprite and pixel art, modelling, texturing, animation and level design for commercial and educational games. 

Time of Hire

  • Fall Term (September - December)
  • Winter Term (January - April) 

Types of Roles

Examples: Game Designer, 2D/3D Artist, 2D/3D Animator, 3D Modeller, Concept Artist, Level Designer 

Required Hours

Qualified students are approved for non-mandatory field placement in their final year of study and must complete at least 120 hours (part-time).

Graphic Design – Advanced Diploma

Program Overview

The Graphic Design Advanced Diploma program provides students with an understanding of communications design, corporate design and advertising design. Students learn to build a strong foundation in typography, illustration, art direction, editorial design, web design, motion graphics and more. 

Time of Hire

Examples: Graphic Designer, Illustrator, Editorial Designer, Environmental Designer, Exhibition Designer, Web Designer, Motion Graphics Designer, Art Director, Production Artist

Required Hours

Interaction Design – Advanced Diploma

Program Overview

The Interaction Design Advanced Diploma program equips students with design skills in user experience (UX), user interface (UI) and visual design with programming. Students learn to create meaningful interactive experiences for digital and physical platforms, such as websites, wearables and mobile devices.

Brand Design – Honours Bachelor’s Degree

Program Overview

The Brand Design Honours Bachelor’s Degree program prepares students to be forward-looking brand designers with strengths in collaboration, research, critical and strategic thinking, technical design execution and brand storytelling. Students learn to bridge business strategy, technology, and the design world to produce truly innovative brand experiences. 

Time of Hire

Spring/Summer Term (May - August) 

Types of Roles

Examples: Brand Designer, Digital Designer, UI Designer, Design Strategist, Design Researcher, Graphic Designer, Content/CopyWriter, Content Strategist, Communications Officer, Marketing Researcher, Communications Designer

Required Hours

Students are required to secure a paid co-op work term as part of Ontario Ministry of Education requirements and they must complete a total of 420 hours (full-time).

Digital Experience Design – Honours Bachelor's Degree

Program Overview

The Digital Experience Design - Honours Bachelor’s Degree program produces designers who can solve problems using human-centred, socially conscious and economically viable digital solutions. Students develop skills to critically analyze human-computer interactions and work with emerging digital technologies in response to the ever-changing conditions of technology and culture. 

Time of Hire

Spring/Summer Term (May - August)

Examples: UX/UI Designer, Digital Experience Designer, Product Designer, Interaction Designer, Service Designer, UX Researcher, Design Researcher, Information Architect, Web/Mobile Designer, Visual Designer, Production Artist

Design Management – Postgraduate

Program Overview

The Design Management Postgraduate program prepares students to lead multidisciplinary design teams to develop products and services based on strategic business objectives. Students learn practical tools and interpersonal facilitative skills, as well as the business knowledge required to manage a consultancy or corporate design division. 

Time of Hire

Late Winter Term (March - April) 

Types of Roles

This unique postgraduate program brings design professionals from across the world with work experience in a variety of different industries. The student’s industry of expertise is dependent on the cohort of students. Required Hours

Students are required to complete a minimum total of 120 hours (part-time for 8 weeks).

Web Development – Front-End Design – Postgraduate

Program Overview

The Web Development - Front-End Design Postgraduate program prepares students with skills in both application and interface development to deliver solutions that meet industry standards for effective code engineering and responsible design. Students are equipped with the skills to translate concepts into visual and functional interfaces, websites, applications, and systems that respond to the needs of a client - in sectors ranging from health care to fintech, retail to technology and beyond. 

Time of Hire

Spring/Summer Term (May - August)

Types of Roles

Examples: Front-End Web Developer, Full Stack Web Developer, Web Designer, UX/UI Developer, Software Engineer, Software Designer, Interactive Media Developer 

Required Hours

Students are required to complete a total of 350 hours (full-time).

Funding Opportunities

There are government grants and funding programs that can help subsidize the cost of hiring students, whether you’re an established leading business, non-profit organization, or small creative agency. Browse external funding opportunities below.  

New Student Work Placement Program (SWPP)

This program funded by Employer and Social Development Canada (ESDC) provides wage subsidies to hire post-secondary students for paid work experiences such as mentorship programs, co-operative terms, field placements, and internship opportunities related to their field of study. 

How much can you get?

50% up to a maximum of $5,000 for every student hired.

70% up to a maximum of $7,000 for students hired in a priority group.

Canada Summer Jobs (CSJ)
