Residence Community Living Standards during COVID-19

Main Content

We know you are working hard to prevent the spread of COVID-19. We want you to know that we are too.

We have made some changes to our Residence Community Standards (RCLS) to promote Ontario's safety guidelines and to support limited staffing.

What are the Resident Community Living Standards?

The RCLS lists the guidelines expected of all residents, the rights, privileges, and responsibilities of residents, and the judicial procedures used when the guidelines aren’t met. Basically, the RCLS outline the rules that support the creation of a welcoming and safe community for everyone living here.

What are the changes made to the RCLS?

Guests

Guests will not be permitted in Residence until further notice. We are heeding guidance from the province and Toronto Public Health on physical distancing. Upon clearance from health authorities, we will consider resuming our usual guest policy.

Masks

Masks are mandatory in all public spaces of the Residence, including lobbies, hallways, stairwells, elevators, kitchens and lounges. You do not need to wear a mask when you are in your suite/bedroom. If you visit another residence suite or vice versa, we recommend wearing a mask.

Physical Distancing

Residents must practice physical distancing at all times and remain two meters apart to keep each other and our Residence Community safe.

Individual suites are occupied by two residents, and no more than 4 residents (including occupants) can be gathered within a suite at one time. Therefore, individual students can have one visiting resident per suite at a time. These efforts are to comply with physical distancing recommendations, which may be reviewed should these restrictions be amended by health authorities.

Common Areas

To support physical distancing and reduce density in communal spaces, we have introduced a limit of one person per space in all of our common areas, including kitchens, laundry rooms and elevators, until further notice.

Room Moves/Isolation

A room switch may be required to support isolation measures. We will only request this if necessary and provide you with advance notice.

Smoking/Vaping

Smoking, vaping or producing the odour of cannabis in the Residence can result in damages. Residents may be charged a $250.00 fine and the cost to fix all damages associated with use in-suite or the incorrect storage of products. George Brown College is a smoke-free campus and smoking is not permitted at any time. This includes the Residence and the Residence Courtyards.

Cleanliness

Residents are responsible for cleaning their bedroom and common areas of their suite. Residents will be charged a $50.00 deep cleaning fee for suites that are not clean during room inspections. If cleanliness issues result in damage, the resident may also be charged to repair the damage.

What happens if someone doesn't follow the RCLS?

Residence Life Staff will investigate the incident and make a decision on applying sanctions. Sanctions can range from a written warning to eviction and may include tasks to promote learning, community betterment, or fines. Any resident involved can share information they want to be included in the decision and appeal a decision if they don’t agree.

What else should I know?
  1. It is your right to have a meeting online or via phone to explain an incident with Residence Life Staff before a decision on sanctions is made.
  2. If you disagree with a decision or want to include more information, you can appeal a decision within 72 hours.
  3. You can also appeal a decision if the cost of a fine or charges significantly impact you.
