Statement from George Brown College President Dr. Gervan Fearon on the stabbing at the University of Waterloo

The June 28th stabbing incident that took place in a gender studies class at the University of Waterloo has left us all horrified and deeply concerned. Our hearts go out to all those directly impacted by the violent incident, as well as the broader community of trans, nonbinary, two-spirit, and gender diverse people.  We are all affected and harmed when violence of this nature is perpetrated. We must all raise our voices in expression of concern and in expression of support for the 2SLGBTQIA+ communities.

While this happened on a university campus outside of Toronto, the trauma and fear impacts those in our own college community, especially those who are deconstructing gender norms, asking critical questions about colonial and patriarchal systems, or who identify as 2SLGBTQIA+. I want to assure you that we are here for you. Our counselling services and resources are available for any students, faculty, and staff who may be in need.

I want to reaffirm our commitment to protecting 2SLGBTQIA+ and gender marginalized people from harm, discrimination, and harassment. We are committed to ensuring a learning, teaching, working and research environment that is safe and free from gender-based violence. The Office of Anti-Racism, Equity and Human Rights Services (OAREHRS) has expanded its capacity to respond, support and raise awareness. Together, let us stand against such acts, and work towards a safer and more inclusive future.

Dr. Gervan Fearon
President, George Brown College
