New student mural inspired by fashion, jewellery and Indigenous history

On November 1, the Indigenous Initiatives Department and The School of Fashion and Jewellery hosted a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony to unveil a new student mural at Casa Loma Campus.

AJ Valerio, Emily Kang, and Maemaengwahn (Maemae) Fam-Ducharme, students in the Fashion Design & Techniques program, expressed that inclusivity was central to the inspiration of the mural. The artists paid homage to each department within its vicinity, including fashion, jewellery, art and design, dance, computer technology, and Indigenous Initiatives.

Emily was inspired by the harmony and inclusivity on campus, the vast and individual passionate stories of each student and why they do what they do.

For Maemae, who is Anishinaabe, the inspiration behind her work came from the woodlands style paintings her father made when she was growing up. Using the George Brown brand colours, the artists created the skyline of Toronto and a pair of wings modelled after a monarch butterfly.

The butterfly also portrays just how quickly time seems to fly by during one's time in college, by depicting a series of "snapshots" that show various types of moments that students may experience while they are in class, said AJ.

The mural can be seen in the Fashion Atrium, on the fourth floor of Casa Loma Campus.
