Your First Tasks

You will be able to start your semester off smoothly if you can cross off these tasks from your to-do list ahead of time. That way, you’ll avoid lines and wait times, confusion and even late fees! Here’s what you need to prioritize:

Reset your password and set up Multi-Factor Authentication

If you haven’t updated your password since you received your offer letter, please do so as soon as possible. You will also need to set up the required Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA), which helps keep your account secure. You will not be able to access your accounts until you set up MFA.

Access your accounts: email, STU-VIEW and Brightspace

Once you have your password and MFA sorted, we highly recommend you set up your George Brown email account and get familiar with platforms such as STU-VIEW (where administrative information and tasks are) and Brightspace (the Learning Management System where your courses will be once they start).

Scroll down to the Websites, apps & tech support section below for more info!

Register for your courses

If you haven’t yet, it’s important to register for your courses as soon as they open, so you save your spot!

Once you have registered, your timetable will immediately be available to view.

Pay your fees

Be sure to pay your fees by the deadline dates stated in your registration letter and invoice. A non-refundable tuition deposit is required by the due date in order to hold your place in the program. If you are anticipating receiving OSAP and Better Jobs Ontario funding, the funds are typically released after the start of classes, and as such, you may need to pay this deposit before you get your OSAP funds. Late payments will be subject to a non-refundable late fee of $150 CAD.

Health Benefits

The George Brown Student Association offers health and dental insurance to all full-time students. The student health and dental fee plan is mandatory and included in full-time student tuition fees. However, you do have the option to opt out of the coverage.

There are four different coverage plans to choose from:

  • Balanced Plan (Automatically enrolled in)
  • Enhanced Drug Plan
  • Enhanced Dental Plan
  • Enhanced Extended Health Care Plan

Please note:

  • All full-time domestic post-secondary and ESL students, as well as international students registered in a post-secondary program, are covered under the Balanced Plan automatically. You also have the option of changing your Balanced Plan to one of the other Enhanced Plan options that best suit your needs by the deadline.
  • Once the deadline has passed, you are no longer allowed to change your plan. Please note that your plan choice is valid for the entire academic year and cannot be changed until the following September.
  • Each academic year, you need to reapply for your plan choice since it is only valid for one academic year.

Any inquiries about health plans should be directed to HealthBenefits@sagbc.ca.

Financial Aid

At George Brown, we believe that financial resources shouldn't be a barrier to receiving an education. We have resources available to help you pay for your education, and we encourage you to visit the Financial Assistance Office on your campus for more information.

OSAP (Domestic Students Only)

OSAP provides financial assistance through loans (money you pay back) and grants (money you don't have to pay back). Additionally, if you show unmet needs on your OSAP application, you may be considered by the ministry for the Student Access Guarantee, a source of non-repayable bursary funding. If you’re a full-time student making your first OSAP application, you’ll need to complete a short information session presented just before you start your application.

The session will help you understand:

  • How OSAP works
  • Your roles and responsibilities if you become an OSAP recipient
  • Basic financial information to support you through your post-secondary education (for example, creating a budget, understanding credit and debt)

You can log in and out of the module at any time, and your progress will be saved. If you choose to complete the module in one sitting, it will take you approximately 15 minutes.

Canada Learning Bond & RESPs

If you have a Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP), you may be eligible for the Canada Learning Bond.

A RESP is a special long-term savings account for education. While often opened by parents, anyone can open an RESP. When you open a RESP at your financial institution, you can ask them about applying for the Canada Learning Bond and the Canada Education Savings Grant. Eligible expenses include tuition, books, tools, transportation and rent.

With a Canada Learning Bond, even if you sign up now, regardless of the time of year in your studies, you can qualify for up to a $500 to $2,000 benefit to help your educational expenses.

Eligibility:

  1. Must be a Canadian permanent resident or citizen
  2. Must be turning 18 on or after January 1, 2022
  3. Parents must have a household income of less than $53,359
  4. Must have a valid Social Insurance Number (SIN)

Awards & Scholarships

George Brown’s awards program recognizes students in need along with those who demonstrate excellence. Our variety of scholarships, awards and bursaries can assist you with the cost of your education. All you have to do is apply!

Typically, the award application portal is open from two weeks ahead of the semester until four weeks into the semester.

For more information on how to apply, types of awards, eligibility, FAQ and more, visit our Awards and Scholarships page. We’ve also compiled some tips! Read this article in the Student Portal for the inside scoop on how to perfect your application.
