George Brown College (GBC) is excited to welcome students back for an action-packed start to the academic year. One of the highlights of Orientation Week -- which kicks off on Tuesday, August 27th -- is a unique Lock Installation at the St. James campus. It was crafted by a team of four skilled female welders. This art piece invites new students to "lock in" their commitments for the school year and will be a central feature of the continuous campus tours that day and throughout the week. "After being laid off from the service industry, I was looking for more stability and turned to the Welding Techniques program at George Brown," said Lilly Lazare-Greene, Lab Development Technologist at GBC.

Building with mass timber requires a customized approach and a shift in mindset. PCL’s subject matter experts share how their innovative solutions help deliver Ontario’s first mass timber, net-zero carbon emission institutional building. A global model of mass timber construction, Limberlost Place is a 10-storey, tall wood, net-zero carbon emission building that will soon be a part of George Brown College’s Waterfront campus in downtown Toronto, Ontario. From custom engineering to intricate mass timber installations, constructing a building of this caliber required PCL to put years of experience in the mass timber construction industry to work.

The Dirty Seahorse partnered up with George Brown College's School of Fashion to create and test prototypes of a fitted glove and overall. "The Dirty Seahorse is a small company and they don't have in-house research and development capabilities," said Krista Holmes, associate vice president of research and innovation at the college.  The goal was to create garments that would properly fit, but also be durable and safe. In 2022, the standards organization CSA Group surveyed roughly 2,000 female workers and found a significant number of the women reported problems with the protective equipment they had to wear on the job.

Are EVs driving a carbon neutral future? Not without accelerating clean energy and a trained workforce

Conventional wisdom dictates that electric vehicles (EVs) are the cleanest alternative to cars burning fossil-fuels. The federal government’s target of 100% zero-emission vehicle sales by 2035 is based on the widespread adoption of EVs, and consumers are buying plug-in cars in record numbers. Last December, when Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault announced regulated targets for EV sales in the Electric Vehicle Availability Standard he declared, “There’s no mistaking it. We are at a tipping point.” If these trends continue, we’ll be well on our way to driving ourselves to a decarbonized future in Canada.

The conversation around the challenges immigrants face is all-too common, but Gervan Fearon, PhD, CPA, CGA, ICD.D, president of George Brown College in Toronto, takes a new angle to the narrative. “My biggest challenges have become my greatest strengths,” says Fearon who was born in England to Jamaican parents. “At age six, we moved back to Jamaica and then, at nine, to Canada. So, in under a decade, I had already lived in three different countries. This meant for much of my youth, I felt that I did not fit in anywhere.” Feeling like an outsider was his challenge to overcome, but as Fearon grew in age and confidence, he realized that he was all he had to be.
