Program Overview

The construction industry is one of Canada’s largest employers, and the demand for construction managers continues to grow. Our three-year Construction Engineering Technology advanced diploma program will provide you with the technical, business and interpersonal skills needed to manage construction projects of varying sizes and complexity, while emphasizing sustainable construction practices.

Full Description

In the three-year Construction Engineering Technology advanced diploma program, you’ll gain an in-depth knowledge of the construction industry, including:

  • methods and materials of construction
  • construction estimating
  • construction law, contracts and bidding
  • project management and control
  • construction graphics and detailing

This program shares the first four semesters with the two-year Construction Engineering Technician diploma program. Semesters 5 & 6 prepare you for a wider range of career options in the construction sector. This three-year program equips you for positions with higher levels of responsibility and accountability in areas like construction planning, project management, site superintendent, estimating, budget and bid preparation, sustainable building science and engineering studies.

*If you enroll in January, you must complete semester 2 during May to August of the same year to continue into semester 3 in the fall.

Laptop and Internet Specifications

The Angelo DelZotto School of Construction Management strongly recommends that students own or purchase a laptop and arrange for home Internet service with 25 to 40 Mbps and a ping time of 20–100 ms.

The purchase of a Mac laptop is not recommended because many of the programs do not run on the Mac platform operating system.

Industry

Construction continues to drive Ontario’s economy, employing nearly 600,000 people in 2023 and contributing over $59 billion to the province’s GDP. With almost 20% of the current workforce retiring by 2034, the industry must recruit more than 140,000 new skilled workers to keep pace with growth.

With an expanding regional transit network stimulating redevelopment and growth and population and demographic shifts at the heart of a demand surge for housing, the GTA has the largest construction activity of any region in Canada. In fact, the City of Toronto continues to report the highest number of construction cranes of any city in North America.

Despite the recent challenges, the construction sector in Ontario remains strong, led by significant government investment and continued demand for housing.

The School of Construction Management Program Advisory Committee (PAC) has an engaged committee with a good and broad representation of the industry. Members contribute their ideas and opinions with respect to curriculum changes, industry trends, awards and scholarships, competitions, special events, work experience and mentoring for students.

Educational Pathways

Pathways to the Honours Bachelor of Technology (Construction Management) degree program are also available after completing the three-year Construction Engineering Technology program. Minimum of 3.0 GPA required.
