George Brown Polytechnic's Bachelor of Science in Nursing (Honours) is a four-year degree that will prepare you to contribute positively to Ontario's health care system and beyond. You will develop the requisite skills and knowledge to provide high-quality care to individuals at all stages of life while meeting the needs of various communities and populations. This program offers diverse clinical placements, simulation-based education and interactive teaching and learning. It is a requirement for anyone wishing to work as a Registered Nurse in the province of Ontario. Graduates can write the Next Generation National Council Licensure Examination (NGN) and apply for registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario.

Full Description

George Brown’s Bachelor of Science in Nursing (Honours) (S318) is a four-year degree program designed to qualify you to apply for registration as a Registered Nurse (RN) with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO).

Upon graduation, you will be prepared for the role of an RN in the provision of safe, competent, ethical and evidence-informed care across a multitude of practice settings. Your education will help you respond to the needs of individuals, families, diverse communities and populations, including vulnerable youth, people challenged by mental health and addictions, the frail elderly and Indigenous peoples.

You will be well prepared to write the Next Generation National Council Licensure Examination (NGN) exam, a legislated mandatory requirement to become an RN in Ontario, and the Jurisprudence Examination. Before to applying for registration with the CNO, you will be required to complete both examinations successfully.

  • Learn to collaborate effectively as a member of an interprofessional health care team
  • Train using the latest digital health tools and technology
  • Practice your skills in our internationally recognized and accredited Simulation Centre
  • Develop a practice that emphasizes equity, reconciliation and innovation
  • Build relevant leadership, scholarship and global health skills

As a graduate of the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (Honours) program, you will have the requisite skills and knowledge to contribute positively to Ontario's health care system and beyond. You will be adept at providing high-quality care to individuals at all stages of life while meeting the needs of diverse communities and populations. Experiential learning will enable you to apply nursing concepts and theoretical perspectives through clinical practice, research and scholarship.

This program prepares learners with the following evidence-informed knowledge base:

  • Nursing and health care theoretical and philosophical perspectives; diverse Ways of Knowing, including Indigenous health and healing practices in response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s 24th Call to Action
  • Anatomy, physiology, pharmacology and microbiology/epidemiology
  • Clinical judgement, evidence-informed clinical practice, intra- and inter-professional collaboration and communication
  • Leadership, research and scholarship, and ethics
  • Digital citizenship related to the integration of technological advancements, innovation, data analytics, data science and AI in health care
  • Health equity, sociocultural and global perspectives grounded in inclusive and accessible practices

Program Philosophy & Standards

By integrating a population-based approach to care across the lifespan, this program emphasizes addressing the social determinants of health within a health promotion and intra- and inter-professional context. 

The philosophical underpinnings of the program demonstrate a commitment to promoting equity, reconciliation and belonging through the integration of anti-racism initiatives, Indigenization and inclusive practices that are modelled and embedded within and across the curriculum and program. It embraces and honours the complex intersecting identities within and beyond our community and the health and well-being of all.

Program Approval

The new George Brown Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program (Honours) has received preliminary program approval in accordance with the College of Nurses of Ontario. Graduates from this program are eligible to apply for registration as a Registered Nurse in Ontario.

Your Field Education Options

George Brown has an extensive network of clinical partnerships to support clinical placement experiences and the delivery of clinical education.

Requisite skills will be developed in external clinical practice settings, simulated clinical environments and lab settings.

Our internationally recognized and accredited Simulation Centre offers dedicated space for learners to safely engage in degree-level programming.

Our RN programs include:

  • Registered Nurse – Critical Care (Postgraduate)
  • Registered Nurse – Operating Room Perioperative Nursing (Postgraduate)
  • Registered Nurse – Perinatal Intensive Care Nursing (Postgraduate)

Admission Requirements

Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD), or equivalent, with:

  • Six (6) Grade 12 University (U) or University/College (M) courses, including: Grade 12 (U) English, Grade 12 (U) Mathematics, Grade 12 (U) Chemistry, and Grade 12 (U) Biology, or equivalents, with a combined average of 75% or above
  • A grade of at least 75% in prerequisite English
  • A grade of at least 75% in prerequisite Math
  • A grade of at least 75% in prerequisite Chemistry
  • A grade of at least 75% in prerequisite Biology

Applicants are required to have a final grade of not less than 60% in each of the two additional courses.

Note: Subject to competition, applicants may be required to have grades higher than the minimum listed. 

Mature applicants (Age 19 or older):

  • Mature applicants applying to degree programs must be 19 years old by the first day of scheduled classes
  • Mature applicants must meet individual prerequisite courses and GPA requirements
  • Admissions testing is not permitted for Bachelor's degree programs.
  • Full academic disclosure of postsecondary education, including partial completion must be submitted by all applicants for all fields of study.
    • Applicants with prior nursing studies must present a minimum combined grade point average (CGPA) of 2.33 (C+) and be considered “In Good Standing”

Additional Notes

  • There is no advanced standing option for this program. All applicants must start from semester 1
  • Prerequisite credits that are more than 10 years old will not be considered for admission purposes

Failure to disclose previous postsecondary course work is considered an academic offense and may result in withdrawal from the program or rescinding an offer of admission.

English Language Proficiency

English language proficiency is essential. All applicants are required to have the English (ENG 4U) credit (or equivalent).  English Language Proficiency results are not acceptable substitutes for the ENG 4U credit.

    • Applicants with prior nursing studies must present a minimum combined grade point average (CGPA) of 2.33 (C+) and be considered “In Good Standing”

Additional Notes

  • There is no advanced standing option for this program. All applicants must start from semester 1
  • Prerequisite credits that are more than 10 years old will not be considered for admission purposes

Failure to disclose previous postsecondary course work is considered an academic offense and may result in withdrawal from the program or rescinding an offer of admission.

English Language Proficiency

English language proficiency is essential. All applicants are required to have the English (ENG 4U) credit (or equivalent).  English Language Proficiency results are not acceptable substitutes for the ENG 4U credit.

Domestic Applicants with International Transcripts

Note: Domestic applicants submitting international transcripts require a Canadian equivalency evaluation for this program.  This can be obtained through ICAS (International Credential Assessment Service) at icascanada.ca or WES (World Education Services) at wes.org/ca.
