On September 23, alumni, students, faculty, and community members gathered at the Fashion Exchange at George Brown Polytechnic for a special fireside chat celebrating designer, entrepreneur, and honorary degree recipient George Sully and the upcoming release of his memoir, Designing in the Dark.

Hosted by the Fashion Exchange in collaboration with the Alumni Relations Fashion Chapter, the event highlighted Sully’s remarkable career journey, his contributions to Canada’s creative industries, and the experiences that shaped the person, creative leader, and entrepreneur he is today.

A Conversation on identity, resilience, and entrepreneurship

Moderated by Dr. Ana Rita Morais, Dean of the Faculty of Business and Creative Industries and Culinary Arts, the discussion explored themes from Designing in the Dark, including creativity, business, identity, and resilience.

Attendees gained insight into Sully’s path as a designer and entrepreneur, as well as his experiences navigating and building a career as a person of colour in the creative sector. The conversation offered an honest reflection on the challenges, opportunities, and lessons that have defined his journey.

A Lasting Connection to George Brown

In 2022, George Brown Polytechnic awarded Sully an Honorary Bachelor of Brand Design in recognition of his significant contributions to design, branding, entrepreneurship, and the creative community.

Returning to campus to mark the release of his memoir marked another milestone in his longstanding relationship with the institution and gave him an opportunity to share his story with the next generation of creatives and business leaders.

“George Sully’s journey is a powerful example of creativity, resilience, and the courage to forge your own path,” said Dr. Ana Rita Morais. “It was a privilege to welcome George back to George Brown and celebrate his achievements with our students, alumni, faculty, and community. His memoir offers an inspiring reflection on identity, entrepreneurship, and the experiences that shaped his remarkable career. We are proud to celebrate George and his continued connection to our community.”

Bringing community together

The event brought together members of the George Brown community for an afternoon of meaningful conversation, networking, and celebration. Guests also enjoyed refreshments prepared by alumnus Chef Jex Paisley, with support from the Student Association.

As Sully reflected on the personal and professional experiences behind Designing in the Dark, attendees left with valuable insights into leadership, perseverance, and the importance of embracing one’s unique path.
