Program Description

Program Overview

The Jewellery Essentials one-year certificate program gives you the skills and techniques you need to begin a fulfilling career in the jewellery industry. Get ready to learn to solder, file, saw, polish and finish metals, including copper, brass, silver and gold. You will learn to create jewellery pieces through fabrication, computer modelling and casting techniques.

George Brown’s Jewellery programs were ranked #7 in the world by Penarth Nub News. Find out why.

Full Description

In the Jewellery Essentials one-year certificate program, you will develop basic goldsmithing skills while creating simple v-pieces in copper, brass, silver and gold. We will teach you how to differentiate gemstones, apply polishing techniques and use a variety of jewellery tools and equipment.

Here are some more skills you'll be able to show off after completing this program:

  • basic knowledge of the lost wax casting process
  • produce reproductions and market-ready jewellery pieces
  • create 2D drawings and 3D models of basic jewellery forms

George Brown Polytechnic’s fully equipped jewellery studio puts industry-leading tools and technology right at your fingertips. From bench-mounted flex shafts and precision torches to rolling mills, and casting equipment, our state-of-the-art workstations mirror professional studios. Students learn hands-on, using the same tools as expert jewellers—right from day one. It is a bona fide academic requirement that students pursuing Jewellery and Gemology Programming at George Brown Polytechnic must use the jewellery and gemmology lab and studio spaces on campus to complete all studio-based assignments and projects. This is key to student success and to learning in a safe studio environment.

Please note: While successful graduates who wish to continue their jewellery education may apply for advanced standing in one of our other Jewellery diploma programs, we strongly recommend you apply for the program that best fits your career goals, as space in our diploma programs is limited and may not be available.

Program Requirements

  • You will need access to a personal laptop or desktop computer, and reliable Internet access for synchronous classes.
  • You will also be required to purchase a Rhino 7 software licence; we will give you more information after registration.
  • To learn about the computer requirements for Rhino 7, please visit the Rhino website.

  • George Brown Polytechnic is committed to maintaining a safe learning environment and is compliant with Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) standards. As part of this commitment, students enrolled in this program are required to wear approved respiratory protection during designated activities. "The Jewellery Essentials program at George Brown Polytechnic not only allowed me to develop transferable skills, but also an attention to detail that can only be found by working in such small scale. I came into the program without any knowledge on making jewellery and after only one year I feel the ways in which I can exercise my creativity are virtually limitless. I am truly thankful to have such a skilful and caring faculty teaching me about my passion."
