Program Description

Program Overview

The two-year General Arts and Science diploma program will help you strengthen your academic skills and refine your goals for further post-secondary studies. Through our articulation agreements with several universities, you’ll be able to enter many degree programs with advanced standing. As part of this program, you’ll take a wide range of required courses in the arts, humanities, social sciences and sciences. You’ll also get to choose two liberal studies electives to broaden your thinking and analytical skills.

Full Description

The two-year General Arts and Science diploma program will help you develop the essential skills you need for further academic studies, including preparing for university. In a supportive environment, you’ll study a diverse range of courses in the arts, humanities, social sciences and science – getting you ready to learn at the diploma or degree level.

This program will also equip you with research, writing, speaking and critical thinking skills. You’ll explore various subjects and approaches, all within a supportive environment to boost your confidence as you look to pursue different academic paths.

Pathway Options

Upon graduation from this two-year (four semester) diploma program, you will have pathway options available to you.  

  • Your may decide to pursue further academic study. Assuming you meet the grade point average and admission requirements for your desired program, you may qualify for other college and university programs with advanced standing. Our curriculum will help you develop the academic background, skills and discipline you need to succeed in those programs.
  • Or, you may choose to enter the workplace directly after graduating from the program. An education in the liberal arts and sciences is valued in many workplaces. Our program will help you develop the advanced communication and critical thinking skills you need in the workplace – particularly for careers that encourage on-the-job professional development.

Educational Pathways

Degree Pathway

George Brown Polytechnic's General Arts and Science (R101) diploma program offers a pathway to university studies.

Brock University Pathway: As a graduate of this program, you may be eligible for admission to Brock University's General Humanities (3-Year) degree with 6.0 transfer credits (4.0 unspecified Year 1 Humanities credits, including context credit; 2.0 unspecified Year 1 Social Science credits, including context credit). University of Toronto Pathway: As a graduate of this program with a GPA of 3.0 or higher, you may be eligible for admission to the Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto (U of T) with 6.0 transfer credits if specific criteria are met. Eligible students also have the opportunity to enrol in spring/summer course(s) at the U of T after successful completion of semester 2 and to earn additional course credits toward a degree.

York University and beyond: A degree pathway to a number of universities, including York University, will give you advanced standing in an undergraduate degree.

Vocation-specific College Studies

If upon graduation you meet the grade point average (GPA) requirements, you may be granted exemptions or advanced standing in other college programs depending on the length of study, grades achieved and admission requirements as outlined by the college and program of interest.

University transfer options 

If after two years of full-time study you meet the GPA requirements, you may be eligible for admission to many university liberal arts and humanities programs, usually with transfer credits equivalent to at least one year of university studies, depending on your grades, the university and the program's admission requirements.

You must adhere to any program-specific and institutional requirements of the universities to which you apply. Other: As a graduate of this program, you may apply for entry into the Bachelor of Laws (LLB) program at the University of Sussex in the United Kingdom, and into George Brown’s degree programs in business, hospitality and technology. Brittany Barber returned to Canada after living in the United States for 13 years to attend the General Arts and Science program at George Brown Polytechnic. After completing high school, she had no idea where to begin looking for a post-secondary education. She took a leap and moved back to Canada after finding out that a university preparatory program would allow her to earn transfer credits towards a degree. She plans to attend university after graduation, and hopes to eventually earn a Masters of Communication. She aspires to become a travel writer and author: “This program has helped me shape my priorities and become a responsible person. In addition to learning the course content, you learn a whole hidden set of underlying skills that are extremely beneficial. This program has helped me surpass my limits and approach new challenges with confidence.”

Eric Aldridge returned to school after spending 10 years working. He viewed college as an accessible pathway to a university education. He enrolled in the General Arts and Science University Transfer program at George Brown Polytechnic, with the knowledge that he could earn 6 transfer credits towards an Honours Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Toronto. “At the end of my first year at George Brown," he says, "I received the Academic Achievement Award for my program. Knowing that my professors recognized the effort that I put into my studies was extremely gratifying, and only motivated me to take on more during my second year.”
