The George Brown College Foundation is pleased to welcome former federal cabinet minister and veteran broadcaster Marci Ien as its new President, ushering in an exciting chapter of supporting the next generation of students.

As former Minister of Women and Gender Equality and Youth and a long-time award-winning television journalist, Ien has built her career on connecting people through their stories, amplifying diverse voices, and strengthening communities.

Her experience building relationships with individuals from all walks of life will help strengthen connections with students, donors, alumni, industry partners, and supporters, enriching the George Brown community and advancing the Foundation's mission to create opportunities for student success.

“Marci brings a remarkable ability to connect with people and a deep commitment to service,” said Dr. Gervan Fearon, President of George Brown Polytechnic. “She understands the transformative power of education and the importance of community. Her leadership will help us build new partnerships, strengthen existing relationships, and create even more pathways to success for our students.”

A testament to advocacy

As an alumna of Toronto Metropolitan University’s Radio and Television program, Ien built a career in television journalism that spanned over three decades, including when she made history as the first Black woman in Canada to co-host a morning show, CTV’s Canada AM, from 2003 until 2016. She’s also reported for CHCH-TV and CTV News and was a co-host on CTV’s The Social from 2016 to 2020.

Her excellence in media and advocacy earned her accolades such as the prestigious Harry Jerome Award from the Black Business and Professional Association and an Honorary Degree from Humber Polytechnic. She also published a memoir, Off Script: Living Out Loud, about her experiences in the industry and building the courage to speak up.

In 2020, Ien became a member of Parliament, representing Toronto Centre, and in 2021 was appointed the Minister of Women and Gender Equality and Youth. During her time in federal politics, she launched Canada’s first-ever National Action Plan to End Gender-Based Violence, a 10-year nationwide strategy to tackle root causes of violence and ensure meaningful, consistent support for survivors. She also launched the first 2SLGBTQIA+ Action Plan, which included $75 million in funding for grassroots queer and trans organizations and $25 million for research and outlined security plans for Pride parades across Canada.

Ien’s commitment to shining a light on and advocating for equity, inclusion, and justice will naturally continue in her new role with the Foundation, making a difference for the wider community.

“Marci's ability to connect people, champion community, and build relationships will be invaluable as we expand opportunities for students and strengthen the Foundation's impact,” said Erin Griffiths, Chair, George Brown Foundation Board of Directors.

Opening doors and creating opportunities with the Foundation

The George Brown Foundation plays a vital role in making education more accessible through scholarships, bursaries, emergency assistance, and food security initiatives. In 2025-2026, the Foundation raised more than $6.3 million in support of George Brown students, including more than $2 million in scholarship awards.

“I’m honoured to join the George Brown Foundation and begin this new chapter alongside such an inspiring community,” Ien said. “George Brown students are ambitious, talented, and determined to make a difference in the world. My hope is that we can bring people together in support of their dreams, opening doors and creating opportunities that help them reach their full potential.”

As she begins her role, Ien is focused on listening and learning from the George Brown community, including students, donors, alumni, partners, and supporters.

“I want to understand what matters most to them, what we are doing well, and how we can do even better. Together, we can deepen existing partnerships, foster new connections and expand our impact so that more students have the support they need to succeed.”

Celebrating the Food Court Social

Tonight, the George Brown Foundation hosts its annual Food Court Social at the Waterfront Campus, bringing more than 700 guests together to sample food and beverages from curated stations from Toronto’s top culinary talent, while networking with sponsors and alumni.

The Food Court Social supports George Brown Polytechnic’s Augmented Education Program, which reduces barriers to education and employment for individuals facing complex and chronic challenges, including mental health concerns and addictions.

Join us in welcoming Marci Ien and donate to the George Brown College Foundation to support the future of education.
