Nathalie Cook shares her inspiring journey to champion women in sports

In 1991, Nathalie Cook graduated from George Brown College's (GBC) Sport & Event Marketing program, poised to disrupt a male-dominated industry and blaze a trail that would elevate women in Canadian sports.

The former Vice President of TSN (The Sports Network) and Bell Media visited GBC on March 25, 2025, for an inspiring fireside chat highlighting her remarkable journey and ongoing advocacy for gender equity in sports.

A legacy of leadership

"Leadership doesn't require a title—you don't have to be a VP or Manager to lead change, particularly cultural change, within an organization," Cook shared during the event hosted by the Centre for Business. This philosophy has guided her groundbreaking career, which includes being one of Canada's first female sports agents, championing Olympic athletes, and spearheading TSN's first-ever all-female Raptors broadcast.

The fireside chat explored several critical topics, including gender equity in sports business, unconscious biases affecting women's career growth, and strategies for building confidence in male-dominated industries. Cook's insights proved especially relevant amid Toronto's expanding women's professional sports landscape, which now includes the Toronto Sceptres Hockey, AFC Toronto Soccer, and the upcoming Toronto Tempo basketball team, which will debut in 2026.

"Watching Nathalie's journey has been nothing short of inspirational,” shared Peter Widdis, Sport & Event Marketing program coordinator and program alumnus. “She embodies everything we hope to instill in our students—innovation, resilience, and a commitment to positive industry change. Nathalie is creating entirely new pathways for our graduates to follow. Her willingness to return and share her experiences demonstrates the powerful cycle of mentorship that makes our GBC community so special."

From award recipient to moderator

Adding a unique dimension to the event was moderator Nikita Yadav, a current Sport & Event Marketing student and recipient of the 5 to Watch Nathalie Cook Canadian Women & Sport Disruptor Award presented by TSN, an initiative established by Cook herself to support emerging female leaders in sport.

"From receiving the award to having the honour of hearing from Nathalie herself—I truly didn't see this full-circle moment coming, and I'm incredibly grateful," reflected Yadav. "Our conversation touched on Nathalie's remarkable journey, her lasting legacy, and important issues like gender equity in the sports business, unconscious bias, and the future of inclusive leadership in the industry."

The award proved transformative for Yadav, an international student who had been questioning her place in Canadian sports. "Receiving this award at that moment felt like a sign from the universe—a reminder not to give up," she explained. "It reassured me that although my path may look different, I'm creating opportunities for myself, which is something to be proud of."

Continuing impact

Through initiatives like the Disruptor Award and her ongoing mentorship, Cook continues to create pathways for future generations of women in sports. Her story highlights how GBC graduates ensure sports become more inclusive at all levels, from playing fields to executive offices.

From GBC student to industry innovator, she is now back as a mentor, inspiring the next wave of sports marketing professionals. Her legacy is a powerful reminder that with passion and perseverance, graduates can succeed in their chosen fields and transform them for the better.
