Recent business grad hopes to help girls and women ‘break glass ceilings’

Business graduate Sena Harcar

Sena Harcar is passionate about helping girls and women achieve personal and professional growth. Although she’s landed a job after graduating from George Brown’s Centre for Business, she plans to further her education to ensure her passion becomes a career.

“I truly admire women who have and continue to break glass ceilings," Sena says. “I am working towards advancing my education in the business field in order to reach my personal dream job, which is helping girls and women advance in their education and careers.”

Experiencing entrepreneurship

Sena is a recent graduate (December 2019) of the Business Administration program where she earned a spot on the dean’s honours list. She also worked with Enactus George Brown, our chapter of the international non-profit student organization that uses entrepreneurial action to support communities. She served as Facilitator and Curriculum Developer, and later as Project Manager, of Girls Going Forward (GGF)—a group started by Enactus George Brown students. GGF promotes anti-bullying efforts through entrepreneurship.

Sena did a co-op with Transport Canada in the Civil Aviation Services department and landed part-time work there in her final year of the program. She still works at Transport Canada, in the Finance and Administration department.

“Although I have accomplished my mission, I am still working towards my vision of being able to support others in the sense of coaching and mentoring,” she said.

Highly engaged while she was a student, Sena took full advantage of college services such as startGBC, career fairs and Peer Mentor +. She continues in her role as a Linkedin Learning Champion, helping post-secondary students set up effective profiles. She also volunteers every year for the RIS (Reviving the Islamic Spirit) Convention, managing a team of at least seven people.

Words of advice?

When asked what advice she’d offer to girls and young women who’d like to study business, Sena highlighted the importance of finding a mentor in areas you strive to succeed in, as well as getting out there and attending networking events.

“I personally found value in building the connections, whether it was for assignments where I connected different materials and courses together, or for building bridges with others," she said.
