About the Play
Written by William Shakespeare
Directed by Kaitlyn Riordan*
Vienna: where vice goes unchecked and laws have gone unenforced for years. Duke Vincentio, recognizing his own role in the city's decline, decides to take leave and appoints as his replacement his deputy Angelo, who is described as having “ample grace and honour.” But the task is overwhelming. Angelo finds himself so consumed by trying to clean up the place that he doesn’t realize until he is face to face with the truly good, in Isabella, that he would be the greatest offender.
Shakespeare’s “problem play,” the comedy Measure for Measure explores authority, morality, and the nature of true justice, inviting audiences to reflect on the complexities of Isabella’s honest question “To whom should I complain?”
