Endowed Gifts
Endowed funds are never spent; they are invested. It is the earnings from these investments that help support the programs you choose. This means each gift designated for endowment provides permanent financial support for George Brown Polytechnic. Naming an endowed fund for a person or organization you wish to honour is a meaningful and long-lasting way to leave a legacy.
The funds generated from endowment investments are generally used for a specific and designated purpose. Existing endowments can also be enhanced through additional contributions over time.
What is an endowed gift?
An endowment is a cash donation with the stipulation that it be invested and that the principal remains intact in perpetuity. A gift of $20,000 or more can establish a named scholarship, and donors receive a tax receipt for the full amount of their contribution.
How does an endowment help students?
George Brown Polytechnic awards annual scholarships from the interest generated by endowed gifts. Endowments can be directed toward specific programs or student groups based on the donor's wishes.
Can I name an endowment?
Yes. Endowments may be named in recognition of yourself, your family, an organization, colleague, or friend.
What are the award criteria?
When establishing an endowment, award criteria are developed in consultation with the Foundation. George Brown faculty members then select recipients based on those criteria.
Planned Giving
Legacy giving, also known as planned giving or estate giving, refers to a gift to charity that is realized at a future date or through a donor's estate. While donors make gifts throughout their lives, planned gifts involve thoughtful preparation and often the assistance of professional advisors such as lawyers, accountants, or financial planners.
A planned gift can be designated to a specific program, scholarship, or endowment fund and may be of any size.
It is highly recommended that donors speak with professional advisors before making a planned gift and discuss their intentions with family members.
What are bequests?
A charitable bequest is a gift made through your will. You may designate a specific amount, a particular asset, or a portion of your estate to the George Brown College Foundation.
Can I use my life insurance to give?
Yes. You can name the George Brown College Foundation as the beneficiary of an existing or new life insurance policy.
Can I give with RRSPs and RRIFs?
Yes. Retirement plans can be directed to the Foundation through beneficiary designation.
Can I give with securities?
Yes. Publicly traded securities may be transferred directly to the Foundation or sold with the proceeds donated.
Can I gift real estate?
Yes. Primary residences, secondary properties, land, and buildings may also be gifted through estate planning.
What is a charitable annuity?
A charitable annuity can provide guaranteed lifetime income while creating a future gift to the Foundation.
Tribute Giving
Honour Someone Special
A memorial gift or gift in honour is a meaningful way to celebrate or remember a special person while supporting student success at George Brown. Tribute gifts help continue the Foundation's work in supporting access to education.
When you make a tribute gift, an acknowledgement letter or email can be sent to the person or family you designate. Tax receipts are issued to the donor, and donation amounts remain confidential unless otherwise requested.
