Program Description

Program Overview

The Solar Energy Technician program provides comprehensive training in the installation, design, and maintenance of residential or commercial solar photovoltaic (PV) systems.

The online Solar Energy Technician Certificate is an open-enrolment program with no predetermined time limits. That means you can start at your convenience and finish at your own pace.

Full Description

International Students

This online distance program does not qualify for study/work permit (including PGWP) eligibility in Canada. This online distance program is only available to study while remaining in your home country.

The Solar Energy Technician Certificate provides an advanced introduction to solar photovoltaic (PV) and renewable energy fields. The program combines technical and skills training in areas such as safety protocols, electrical and electronics knowledge, system components and sizing, performance analysis, maintenance and troubleshooting techniques.

One of the main learning features of the program is the complete integration of laboratory experiments and projects within the presentation of solar theory This is accomplished through simulation software that simulates the behaviour of electronic circuits and devices used in solar energy systems, such as batteries, battery banks, converters, inverters, automatic transfer switches, solar arrays and other components used in solar power generation and storage.

Students who enrol in the program receive a licensed copy of CircuitLogix, a leading commercially available simulator that includes both 2d and 3d circuit simulation tools. The simulation enables solar PV technicians to learn how to safely install and maintain solar power systems.

The Solar Energy Technician Certificate enables students to learn at their own pace, studying, experimenting, and taking final exams as their busy schedule allows. While the average completion time is approximately 24 weeks of part-time study, there are no fixed schedules for completion. This flexibility allows you to progress through the content at your own pace. Each module concludes with an online final exam.

The program is presented in 12 modules, each containing text, animations, mini audio lectures, illustrations, review questions, online resources, over 50 pre-built lab projects and practice exams.

Prerequisites
