GB Food Initiatives

Main Content

At George Brown Polytechnic, we recognize that access to nutritious, affordable, and sustainably sourced food is essential to student success, well-being, and community health. Through a range of food security, nutrition, and sustainability initiatives, we are committed to creating greater access to fresh, healthy meals while supporting responsible food systems and equitable food access. From providing affordable fresh produce and nutrition education to partnering with Fair Trade and Indigenous-owned suppliers, our programs help foster a healthier, more inclusive campus community where everyone can thrive.

Coffee on campus

Campus catering uses Birch Bark Coffee as its preferred coffee. Birch Bark Coffee is a First Nations-owned and operated business that farms 100% organic Fair Trade Arabica coffee. Birch Bark reinvests proceeds to fund long-term, sustainable initiatives that provide essential resources to Indigenous communities across Canada.

George Brown Polytechnic is proud to be a Fair Trade Campus, demonstrating our commitment to sustainability through GB Eats. From responsible food sourcing and preparation to waste reduction, we prioritize eco-conscious practices in every aspect of our operations. Enjoy Fairtrade certified coffee, tea, and chocolate at all GB Eats locations and be part of the change toward a more sustainable future.

Fresh Start Program

By establishing the Fresh Start program fund, George Brown Polytechnic is increasing access to food security and promoting community health and wellness. The funds raised will provide free breakfast items, deliver nutritional education, and support discount meal programs. With Fresh Start, GBP is continuing to create new opportunities that will foster collaboration and spur innovative initiatives to support community success with increased food access programming.

Good Food Market

The Good Food Market at St. James Campus is a weekly non-profit fruit and vegetable market run in partnership with FoodShare Toronto. The market supports convenient, low-cost access to fresh, nutritious food, and advocates for student food security.

All students and GBP community members are welcome.

Student Nutrition Access Program (SNAP)

The Student Nutrition Access Program (SNAP) supports the nutrition, health, and wellness needs of George Brown Polytechnic students, helping them achieve academic success through education, resources, and practical support. Through a variety of programs and initiatives, SNAP empowers students to make informed food and lifestyle choices by promoting healthy eating based on Canada’s Food Guide, teaching nutrition label literacy, explaining the difference between expiry and best-before dates, and sharing proper food storage techniques to reduce waste and extend freshness. SNAP also encourages overall well-being by providing strategies for building healthier daily habits and connects students with valuable community resources, including food banks, government and social assistance programs, mental health services, and employment supports.
