George Brown Polytechnic is located on the traditional territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and other Indigenous peoples who have lived here over time. We are grateful to share this land as treaty people who learn, work and live in the community with each other.
George Brown Polytechnic launched Pride Month with a room full of energy and purpose at its annual Pride Kick-Off Celebration, transforming the William Peyton Hubbard atrium into a vibrant hub of colour and connection.
Organized by the Office of Anti-Racism, Equity, and Human Rights (OAREHRS) in partnership with the Pride at George Brown Working Group, the event brought together students, staff, and community members for a shared celebration of 2SLGBTQIA+ identities and allyship.
The afternoon featured interactive activities, performances, and opportunities to connect. From standout ballroom performances and community organizations to creative arts stations and a festive photo booth, the event brought joy, laughter, and meaningful engagement. Guests mingled, built new connections, reconnected with friends and colleagues, and committed to advancing 2SLGBTQIA+ inclusion at George Brown and beyond
A month of connection, learning, and celebration
Throughout June, George Brown is hosting a dynamic lineup of Pride events designed to engage the community. Opportunities include networking through Out at Work, connecting students and alumni, and community-building gatherings such as Pride Picnics and the Kaleidoscope employee affinity space.
Creative and reflective programs will also be on offer, including Craft Your Pride sessions and educational experiences like Come As You Are: 2SLGBTQIA+ Sex Ed, alongside discussions that centre Two-Spirit perspectives and Indigenous experiences through the Indigenous Knowledge Keeper Series.
Why Pride matters at George Brown
Pride Month at George Brown isn’t just a celebration; it reaffirms our responsibility to create a community where 2SLGBTQIA+ people are welcomed, supported, and empowered to thrive. It also underscores the ongoing commitment to equity and belonging, acknowledging the progress made and the work that is still required to dismantle barriers rooted in exclusion, discrimination, and systemic inequities.
By actively cultivating spaces where authenticity is respected, dialogue is deepened, and community is strengthened, these initiatives can move beyond awareness to inspire action, equipping individuals to help build safer, more inclusive environments on campus and beyond.
Pride is a time to honour the richness of intersecting identities across our community and to centre voices, experiences, and leadership that drive meaningful change, not only in June but throughout the year.
