startGBC #WhyNotMe August 2025 Entrepreneur Spotlight: Ibrahim Ali, CEO, Healing Culture
As we close out the summer startGBC work-integrated learning cohort and open registration for the fall semester, what better way to reflect than to celebrate an amazing student who has launched an incredible ethical company.
We are proud of Ibrahim and his wife, Sara, who, through lived experience, discovered how toxic the majority of candles sold in Canada are. Armed with powerful research and data, they began the mission to create a candle, handcrafted from 100% soy or beeswax, blended with authentic natural fragrances infused with soft florals, spices and rare botanicals.
Healing Culture was born out of purpose, created to be ethical and conscious about its impact on the lived environment, sustainability and wellbeing of its customers and their loved ones.
Come meet Healing Culture and 20 other George Brown College startup businesses at the startGBC Pop Up Market at St. James Campus, 200 King Street, Toronto, ON M5A 3W8 between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., Tuesday, August 6, 2025, and begin your ritual of self-care.
About Ibrahim
Ibrahim Ali is a husband, a father, and an entrepreneur based in Toronto. Ibrahim's journey started with tutoring in high school to earn money, then co-founding an event management company that grew to serve high-profile clients, including members of the royal family. Ibrahim later spent over a decade in operations management, working with global partners across China, the US, and Turkey.
Today, Ibrahim is the cofounder of Healing Culture, a home fragrance brand focused on clean ingredients, thoughtful design, and intentional living. I’m also a student in the Marketing Management and Digital Media program at George Brown College, continuing to grow the brand with purpose.

What made you want to become an entrepreneur?
I’ve always had an entrepreneurial mindset. I started tutoring in high school to earn some extra money and quickly realized I enjoyed being in control of my time and outcomes. Later, I co-founded an event management business that gave me a taste of building something from the ground up. That freedom, responsibility, and ability to create something meaningful have stayed with me ever since.
Why did you create your business?
After years of helping other companies grow through operations and brand development, I felt it was time to build something of my own. I wanted to create a product that felt intentional, honest, and useful. Healing Culture was born from a desire to offer clean, design-led home fragrance products that help people slow down, reconnect, and bring a sense of calm into their everyday space.
What successes have you enjoyed so far with building your company?
The early response to Healing Culture has been incredibly encouraging. We've been featured in curated retail spaces, collaborated with other small businesses, and attracted a growing customer base that appreciates clean ingredients and intentional design. Being invited to join the startGBC community is also a milestone I’m proud of. Every small step forward has felt meaningful.
What is one piece of advice you would give to aspiring entrepreneurs?
Start with meaning. Build with care. Growth will follow.
Any organisations or learning resources you would recommend?
So far, the most meaningful support I’ve received has been from startGBC. They’ve created a welcoming space to connect with other entrepreneurs, access valuable resources, and feel seen as a builder in the early stages. I highly recommend it to anyone starting their journey.
Any books or podcasts you would recommend?
Start with Why by Simon Sinek helped me define purpose in my work. The Lean Startup by Eric Ries reminded me to stay flexible, test often, and build with real feedback. I also return to The Almanack of Naval Ravikant for mindset and clarity when things feel overwhelming.
The Diary of a CEO by Steven Bartlett has been incredibly helpful for mindset, leadership, and understanding the emotional side of entrepreneurship. I also follow Alex Hormozi for straight-talking business advice on growth, pricing, and operations. Forbes is a great resource for staying current with industry trends, startup insights, and real-world case studies.
Anything else you would like to share?
Start where you are, even if it’s not perfect. Entrepreneurship is less about having it all figured out and more about staying committed, learning quickly, and adapting as you go.
Be patient with yourself, stay consistent, and surround yourself with people who believe in building something real. Growth takes time, but every small step counts.
