startGBC #WhyNotMe July 2025 Entrepreneur Spotlight: Harmony Roche, Founder, Roots to Healing
About Harmony
As summer goes into full swing, we all should stop and reflect on our own health and well-being as many take leave to enjoy the weather. This month we are delighted to be able to highlight Harmony Roche, a holistic trauma counsellor, author, and founder of Roots to Healing Counselling.
Harmony holds a diploma in Assaulted Women’s and Children’s Counsellor/Advocate from George Brown College and has spent the past several years working directly with communities impacted by intergenerational trauma, domestic violence, and systemic oppression.
Raised within a high-control religious environment and leaving home at 16, Harmony began her own healing journey early — one that taught her the power of inner transformation, self-study, and reclaiming one’s voice.
After years of navigating both personal and professional healing spaces, Harmony realized her deepest calling: to create barrier-free access to holistic mental health support that honours the mind, body, spirit, and ancestral lineage.
That vision became Roots to Healing — a trauma-informed practice that offers one-on-one counselling, empowerment coaching, wellness workshops, and self-guided journals rooted in both the medicine wheel and modern science. Harmony’s work is deeply informed by her lived experience, her studies in epigenetics and emotional regulation, and her belief that healing is a radical act of reclamation.

What made you want to become an entrepreneur?
I became an entrepreneur because I wanted the freedom to be both a present mother and a purposeful healer — on my own terms. I craved flexibility in my career so I could show up fully for my children while also building something meaningful that reflected my values.
Entrepreneurship gave me the ability to structure and tailor my own philosophy of care — blending ancestral knowledge, trauma-informed practice, and holistic healing in a way that honours both science and spirit. It’s not just a business — it’s a calling, a lifestyle, and a legacy.
Why did you create your business?
I created Roots to Healing because I saw a gap — and a deep need — in how mental health services were being delivered. Too often, mainstream care focuses solely on managing symptoms like depression, anxiety, or addiction without addressing the root cause: unresolved trauma and generational pain.
I realized that without healing the source, we stay stuck in cycles of suffering. I also witnessed how the medical-industrial complex has historically harmed marginalized communities, sometimes functioning as a form of systemic violence. For many, this creates fear and distrust, becoming a major barrier to accessing care. I wanted to dismantle that barrier by creating a trauma-informed, holistic approach that empowers people to heal from the root up — not just survive but reclaim their wholeness.
That’s why I founded Roots to Healing Counselling and created self-guided healing journals — as a form of therapeutic art and reflection. These journals blend calming imagery with ancestral wisdom and science-backed insights on generational trauma, giving people a safe space to explore their healing in private, without fear or shame.
My mission is to make healing accessible, intentional, and transformative — one story at a time.
What successes have you enjoyed so far with building your company?
For me, success has been found in the sacred process of creation — taking a vision rooted in purpose and watching it come to life. The joy of transforming an idea into something tangible — a journal, a workshop, a movement — has been one of the most powerful experiences of my journey.
To witness how something born from your own healing can ripple out and inspire healing in others is transformative. That, to me, is a true success: building something that transcends your lifetime and becomes part of a legacy that empowers others long after you’re gone.
What is one piece of advice you would give to aspiring entrepreneurs?
The path to success begins by honouring the talents you've always had — let them lead you into purpose, service, and impact.
Any organisations or learning resources you would recommend?
I’ve found a lot of meaningful support through online communities like Facebook groups and Reddit forums. For budding entrepreneurs, I highly recommend identifying the niche your business falls into — whether it’s wellness, coaching, art, or education — and then seeking out aligned communities on platforms like Facebook, Reddit, or even LinkedIn.
These spaces can be powerful for networking, resource sharing, and feeling less alone on the entrepreneurial path. Sometimes the best support doesn’t come from formal organizations, but from the community — people who truly get your mission and want to see you win.
Any books or podcasts you would recommend?
As someone who blends spirituality with entrepreneurship, I find inspiration in both business and wellness spaces. Some of the podcasts and YouTube channels that have truly supported my growth include:
Diary of a CEO by Steven Bartlett — raw, honest conversations about success, failure, and self-awareness
Earn Your Leisure — deep dives into financial literacy, wealth-building, and entrepreneurship in the Black community
The School of Greatness by Lewis Howes — motivation, mindset, and high-level leadership stories
Know Thyself with André Duqum — interviews with spiritual educators, scientists, creatives, and healers exploring consciousness, trauma healing, and purpose
Anything else you would like to share?
Don’t let self-doubt destroy your vision — it’s there for a reason. Water it. Nurture it. Break it down into bite-sized, actionable steps and move forward one decision at a time. Every great legacy started as a quiet idea.
You don’t have to have it all figured out — you just have to stay rooted, stay consistent, and trust that your vision chose you for a reason.
