George Brown Polytechnic is located on the traditional territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and other Indigenous peoples who have lived here over time. We are grateful to share this land as treaty people who learn, work and live in the community with each other.
George Brown community members are invited to participate in Orange Shirt Day/National Day for Truth and Reconciliation (NDTR) events and observances on September 30.
Orange Shirt Day programming led by the Indigenous Initiatives team will take place at every campus on September 30. These events provide an opportunity to reflect on what we are doing together and as individuals to advance reconciliation.
“I invite you to join us for our Orange Shirt Day programming. These events provide important opportunities for us to connect as a community and deepen understanding of the Canadian residential school system and its profound multi-generational impacts,” said Jessica Rumboldt, Manager, Indigenous Initiatives.
Due to the ongoing strike, our full-time support staff colleagues will be unable to join us for these observances and activities.

Orange Shirt Day events In Toronto
- Visit the Toronto sign at Nathan Phillips Square. In September, it features artwork entitled Rekindle, designed by Joseph Sagaj in recognition of UNESCO’s International Decade of Indigenous Languages (2022 to 2032). It will be lit orange on September 30.
- In 2021, Sagaj also designed Indigenous Initiatives' Star Blanket Medallion.
- Attend the Indigenous Legacy Gathering, September 29 and 30, which is a community-centered gathering celebrating Indigenous families, youth, 2SLGBTQIA+ individuals, and cultural resilience.
