Celebrating International Women's Day (IWD)

Main Content

On March 8, communities from around the world come together to celebrate International Women's Day (IWD) 2025. This is an opportunity to honour women's achievements and advocate for inclusion, equity, and the advancement of gender equality. This year, the Government of Canada's theme for IWD is "Strength in every story" — a concept that underscores the importance of amplifying the voices of all girls and women, particularly those who continue to face barriers to success.

Congress Director Munisha Basiram

The project director of Congress 2025, takes inspiration from her mother. “She’s warm but strategic,” says Basiram. “She’s a hustler and knows how to get things done.”

Check out our IWD Women of Limberlost video to learn about six women who have played a pivotal role in bringing our world-renowned mass-timber building, Limberlost Place, to life. This video not only features women but it was also pitched and produced by women as well.

Connection & Reflection for IWD

At George Brown College, we are proud to have amazing women leaders at all levels who inspire us every day. Earlier this week, many of you joined us for Women@GBC coffee break events each campus. These events have now become an annual tradition and allow us to connect and reflect while we celebrate the contributions women have made to our families and immediate communities, to George Brown College, to classrooms and boardrooms across the country — and beyond.

Taking stock of progress so far

International Women’s Day gives us all the opportunity to take stock of where we are and where we still need to go on our ongoing journey toward a more inclusive Canada and gender equity around the globe.

To truly advance these values, we must collectively address and dismantle systemic barriers that affect the complex, often intersectional identities of women. At George Brown, we must be committed to embracing values and steps that advance anti-racism and combat hate, all while actively fostering a sense of belonging for all.

Let's work together to create a more inclusive and equitable world for everyone and to foster a community where everyone feels valued and respected, where each voice and each story can be heard.
