George Brown College releases Anti-Racism Action Plan

George Brown takes another big step forward in our work to eliminate racism at the college with the release of an action plan to guide our efforts in creating affirming, equitable and inclusive learning and working environments.

The Anti-Racism Action Plan lays out the tangible steps George Brown will take to begin to fulfill commitments and priorities we’ve established in Vision 2030, Strategy 2026 and the Anti-Racism Strategy

“This work is critical to the future of George Brown, as well as our broader community and society.," said George Brown College President Dr. Gervan Fearon. “In order to effect progress and make real change, anti-racism must be ongoing and integrated into everything we do. It is a shared commitment that is informed by our values and priorities and recognizes that our individual and college community success is bound together by our shared and collective action.”

The release of the Anti-Racism Action Plan follows other vital commitments George Brown has made, including the signing of the Scarborough Charter, a document that outlines how Canadian colleges and universities can address anti-Black racism. 5 priority areas

George Brown’s Anti-Racism Action Plan focuses on five priority areas:

  • Commitment: leadership and governance commitments and accountabilities
  • Culture and Climate: creating inclusive and affirming spaces for Black, Indigenous, racialized students and employees, enhancing our learning environment
  • Capacity and Capabilities: ensuring employees and students have necessary skills and awareness to engage in anti-racism
  • Curriculum: integrating anti-racism in teaching, learning and research practices
  • Community: enhancing engagement activities with Black, Indigenous, racialized communities and employee advancement practices

“Intentional actions across these five focus areas, will ensure we engage in an institutional and holistic approach to change, while still building on the foundational work that has been done over the past few years,” said Jennifer Grant, Director of George Brown College’s Office of Anti-Racism, Equity and Human Rights Services. “The plan is intended to usher us towards a future George Brown that is leading in inclusive excellence committed to pursuing racial equity and creating optimal conditions for the collective well-being for all of our students and employees”
