About the Play
Written by Laura Annawyn Shamas
Based on the book by Joan Lindsay
Directed by Tanisha Taitt
For a group of Australian schoolgirls, a romantic Valentine's Day outing ends in an intriguing mystery. What has happened to the three seniors and the mathematics teacher on top of the jagged peaks of Hanging Rock? Based on the runaway bestseller — also the source of the acclaimed Peter Weir film — this adaptation explores a baffling disappearance which takes its toll on a small community in the Australian countryside. Who in the large cast of fascinating characters is responsible for the crime? Is it Mrs. Appleyard, the matron and headmistress of the college who nips brandy on the sly? Does the young, beautiful French teacher Mademoiselle De Poitiers know more than she will say to the police? And what about the two young men who watch the girls climb the mountain? Why do they return to the rock after the police investigation? Or maybe one of the eight remaining schoolgirls conspired against the others … A delicate look at crisis, greed and honesty at the turn of the century, the play shows that what seems pristine and proper on the outside may not be free of moral corruption on the inside.
Produced by special arrangement with THE DRAMATIC PUBLISHING COMPANY of Woodstock, Illinois.
Director's Notes
What a joy it is to get to the run of this show.
On March 13, 2020 (Friday the 13th), I was brimming with anticipation. It was my first time directing for George Brown Theatre School, working with a class that I had taught 2 years earlier, and we were a day away from stepping onto the stage after weeks in the studio. We were all excited to begin the next phase of rehearsal, finally on our set, and to soon share our baby with audiences. Our fervour was quickly extinguished when an emergency meeting was called. We learned that we would all be sent home for ‘two weeks’ due to the declaration of COVID-19 as a global pandemic. Within 72 hours, the production had been cancelled and all of our efforts went up in a puff of smoke.
The show that we were rehearsing was Picnic at Hanging Rock. Now, more than half a decade later, here we are once more. Only this time, the Class of 2020 is the Class of 2026. Everything old is new again.
Picnic at Hanging Rock is a mystery, coming at a time when we seem surrounded by unanswerable questions. Why do we treat one another with cruelty? Why are we so separated from nature? Why are we obsessed with others’ views of us? Why do we hide behind facades? Why do we abuse authority for pleasure? Why do we abandon the least of us? This play illuminates notions of class, of illusion, of conscience, of alienation, of the natural world.
Thank you everyone who helped create the home in which we frolic and explore — the design and production team including Jackie, Logan, Scott, Des’ree, Ina and David. Thank you Michael, Julia, John and Trent. Sue, thank you so much for saying yes to giving this another go. I am so grateful for this time, for you, and for being part of the GBTS family for nearly eight and half years. To the Sarahs O’Brien and Flanigan… you are ROCKSTARS. I don’t how you do what you do, but I want to work with you many more times. THANK YOU, for everything. You are beyond bosses at your jobs.
To work with this class for a second time - after being their 2nd Year American Scene Study prof - has been the gift that keeps on giving. These are 20 very kool humans. We have shared so much, questioned and contemplated so much, and laughed so much. I love foraging with them and I am so thrilled to see them here, on the cusp of graduating and continuing down their artistic paths. Bella, Bianca, Cedric, Chrisevina, Dale, Diana, Eva, Ian, Jack, Jaiden, Jenae, Jonny, Kaleb, Katya, Kimia, Philip, Rachel, Ricky, Shaylynn and Siobhan… I adore you. It’s been an absolute pleasure and I’m very proud of you.
Thanks to my family who always supports me even when they don’t really understand my crazy work and even crazier schedules. Love you always. And thank YOU for being here and supporting the students of the GBTS Company. I dedicate my work in this production to GB Class of 2020 - the first class I ever taught here - with whom I shared a lovely Picnic experience that was never able to come to fruition. The memory of us together has been with me all along the way. Just wanted you to know that the basket’s finally open.
Yay theatre!
Peace & Progress,
Tanisha
