George Brown Polytechnic is located on the traditional territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and other Indigenous peoples who have lived here over time. We are grateful to share this land as treaty people who learn, work and live in the community with each other.
The Work‑Integrated Learning (WIL) Office within the Office of Academic Excellence (OAE) strengthens the connection between academic learning and workplace practice across George Brown Polytechnic. Grounded in the college’s WIL Policy, the office provides institution‑wide leadership to ensure that every WIL experience is high‑quality, equitable, and aligned with academic and industry standards.
Work‑integrated learning integrates a student’s academic studies with meaningful experience in a workplace or professional practice setting. These experiences are built through active partnership among at least three parties: the academic institution, a host organization, and the student. At George Brown, WIL encompasses a wide range of models, including field education and placements, co‑ops, internships, clinical placements, applied research, apprenticeships, service learning, and work experience.
The WIL Office provides direct operational support to students participating in WIL opportunities and to the employers, community partners, and organizations that host them. This includes consultation, issue resolution, navigation of requirements, and ensuring alignment with policy and best practices.
In addition to student and partner support, the WIL Office advises faculty and academic leaders across the college on WIL strategy, curriculum integration, and evidence‑informed best practices. Through this work, the office helps strengthen program quality, enhance student employability, and cultivate sustainable partnerships that benefit learners, industry, and the broader community.
