Armed with a disposable camera, courtesy of George Brown’s dynamic social media team, I ventured in early May to take in my very first Skills Ontario Competition (see video below).

It was wonderful to witness the talent of secondary and post-secondary students from across Ontario. The Toronto Congress Centre was buzzing with energy. Two things that struck me most were the extensive range of program areas represented at the competition and the complete focus students displayed as they put their skills and craft to work.

George Brown Polytechnic students from across 17 different programs competed at this year’s Skills Ontario, ranging from Architectural Technology and Design, Welding and CNC Machining to Cybersecurity, IT Network Systems Administration, Culinary Arts, and Restaurant Service. They proudly represented the institution, garnering many accolades.

Kudos to all our students for their spirited participation!  I would like to extend my congratulations to gold medalists Andrea Marinelli (Heating Systems Technician), Jayesh Busgeeth (Mechanical CAD), Lyndsey Jordan (Sheet Metal Work), Harmanjot Singh (Baking and Pastry Arts), Téo Rapatout (Culinary Arts); silver medalist Crystal Lai (Baking and Pastry Arts); and bronze medalists Andres Maltrana Cole (Restaurant Service) and Téo Rapatout (Culinary Arts, Award of Excellence for a top Francophone identifying competitor).

Andrea, Jayesh, Lyndsey, Harmanjot, and Téo will compete next at the Nationals!

A special shoutout also to our amazing coaches, mentors, and support team.  You help our students shine!
