Program Overview

George Brown Polytechnic's Child Development Practitioner (CDP) program is designed for those already working in the field of Early Childhood who wish to pursue formal studies and receive certification as a Child Development Practitioner. As a CDP apprentice, you will be required to take 23 modules of in-school training on a part-time basis in the evenings. This training is currently being offered in a hybrid format - both in-person and online.

Full Description

George Brown Polytechnic's Child Development Practitioner (CDP) training is designed for those already working in the field of Early Childhood who wish to become certification as a Child Development Practitioner (CDP).

As a participant in this course, you will develop an awareness of the community resources available to support your work as an Early Childhood Educator.

What to expect in this CDP program

As a CDP apprentice, you will be required to complete 23 modules of in-school training.

The CDP training is: 

  • delivered part-time in the evenings (night classes)
  • currently being offered in a hybrid format - both in-person and online

Please note: In-person classes are delivered at our School of Early Childhood located at George Brown Polytechnic’s Toronto Metropolitan University Campus, 99 Gerrard Street East. This campus is located in downtown Toronto and is easily accessible by the TTC. 

This CDP apprenticeship program is delivered by the Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development (MLTSD) through George Brown Polytechnic’s School of Early Childhood.

Your Field Education Options

As a CDP apprenticeship student, you will be required to complete six placements with various age-groups. Five of these placements will be completed with your current employer. The sixth and final placement (Advanced Placement) is three weeks long (full-time) and must be completed at a George Brown Polytechnic Lab School.

Field placement partners require students to show proof of full vaccination to include COVID-19. As such, students will be required to be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 to complete the required field placement components of the program.
