Professor Blair Smith at Congress 2025

Should we think of students as customers?  That's the big idea that powers George Brown College professor Blair Smith's research with post-secondary students.

In conversation with CBC Radio's Metro Morning's David Common, Professor Smith outlines his use of market research to glean actionable insights on student lifestyle, general learning needs and wants, and the overall learning experience.

Smith's research project incorporates focus groups, online surveys and sentiment analysis to build a more empathetic framework for curriculum design – all through the lens of the customer.

The Voice of the Student applied research project was presented at Congress 2025 as part of the Research, Innovation and Entrepreneurship Showcase (RIES). Learn more about the project in GTA Weekly.
