George Brown College (GBC) is developing two new micro-credentials to train students for in-demand jobs in the health care and construction industries, thanks to funding from the Ontario government.

As part of round two of the province’s Micro-Credential Challenge Fund, GBC received funding to work with industry and local employers to develop Housing Maintenance and Construction and Infectious Disease Control micro-credentials. Sixty-five post-secondary institutions submitted their micro-credential proposals during round one of the Ontario government’s challenge. GBC is among the 36 schools to share $5 million in funding for round two.

The goal is to create new and expand existing micro-credential programs in Ontario and fill labour shortages in priority sectors.

GBC already offers a broad range of micro-credentials through our Centre for Continuous Learning, programs that provide learners with the skills needed in the workforce in a timely manner.

What is a micro-credential?

Micro-credentials are a great option if you’re looking to gain new skills relatively quickly. Many programs can be completed online and in a timely way. They focus on specific competencies, so you learn in-demand skills that can be applied right away.

If you’re looking to retrain for a specific job or upgrade your skills for a shift on your current career path, micro-credential programs are a great option.
