WELCOME TO BLACK FUTURES AT GEORGE BROWN COLLEGE
In the coming month, we want to acknowledge the history of the Black community, while celebrating the resilience and excellence that the community has shown over time. To do this, February will mark the beginning of a celebration that will centre the conversation on how we foster and promote Black futures while creating community for all.

FEBRUARY 1, 2022, Opening Ceremony: Black Futures Month, 10:00 A.M. - 11:00 A.M.
The opening ceremony will mark the first-ever Black Futures Month Celebration, with speakers who include our President Dr. Gervan Fearon and other community leaders that have worked towards securing and fostering the growth and prosperity of Black Futures.
This month will mark the beginning of a celebration that will centre the conversation on how we foster and promote Black futures while creating community for all while celebrating the resilience and excellence that the community has shown over time.
Empowering Black Futures: Education & Community Panel, February 2, 2022 10:00 A.M. - 11:00 A.M.
The Empowering Black Futures: Education & Community Panel focuses on the ways we can work towards anti-racism education, community development and African indigenous reclamation and healing. Speakers include:

Black Experiences in Canada, February 2, 2022 11:15 A.M. - 12:00 P.M.
Join us for a roundtable discussion about the Black Experiences in Canada program led by Project Manager Megan Ewing.
This course will showcase the lived experiences of Black people in Canada and explore the ways in which they have expressed themselves, created culture and formed communities based on resilience and solidarity.
Chronicles of Food with Celebrity Chef Raquel Fox, February 8, 2022 10:00 A.M. - 11:00 A.M.
As a former GBC student, Raquel will discuss how she has succeeded in navigating the culinary world and the steps she took to become an author of her cookbook “Dining in Paradise: A food Lover’s Dream of Family Style Dining in the Bahamas”.
Chef Fox will share what has inspired her during her career and tips on how to persevere to achieve your dreams.
Celebrating Cuisine with Chef Andrew Drummond, February 8, 2022 10:00 A.M. - 11:00 A.M.
Our Session will begin with an interview with Chef Drummond where he will discuss what means the most to him when cooking and how we can celebrate with cuisine.
This will be followed by a prerecorded demonstration and a live Q&A session. Come and celebrate the magnificence of cuisine.
Mental Health, Racism, and the Workplace: Informing Black Futures Panel 1, February 15, 2022, 10:00 A.M. - 11:00 A.M.
Advocate and founder of Heart of a Man Donovan McKenzie, sports doctor Dr. Joel Kerr and Personal Trainer Jason Christo will explore the challenges people face with their mental health, as well as ways to promote healing through medical care, physical activity and what we eat.
The panelists will discuss how this all connects to Black futures and good health.
Mental Health, Racism, and the Workplace: Informing Black Futures Panel 2, February 15, 2022 11:15 A.M. - 12:00 P.M.
Executive Director of the Black Opportunity Fund Craig Wellington and Queens University Associate Vice-Principal (Human Rights, Equity and Inclusion) Stephanie Simpson will come together to discuss the implications of racism to one’s mental health.
This conversation will interrogate the nuances of racism and expose the realities of racial trauma in the workplace and other social settings. The audience will gain knowledge on what to do when experiencing racial trauma and how to find one's way towards healing and recovery.

Haircare educator of TK Creations T'kehya Prentice-Cupid will discuss the importance of having natural haircare courses in our post-secondary institutions, Toronto Curly Girl Meet-up founders Camillia and Candicia John will explain the connection to natural hair and identity.
Clean Cuts owner Skip Redman will help us understand the process of building community through barbering and Career and Wellness Coach Kadine Cooperwill provide her perspective on how we can promote wellness and self-care for work-life balance.
Black Professionals: Inspiring Black Futures, February 22, 2022, 10:00 A.M. - 11:00 A.M.
Chef Anthony Bradshaw, founder of Street Bites, will describe his path and how he become a successful entrepreneur, the John sisters of Curly Friend Fashion will talk about the highlights of owning their own fashion brand, as well as some of the challenges.
Environmental Civil/Transportation Engineer Patrick Garelwill explain his path to engineering and the many notable projects he has worked on throughout his career.
This event is an opportunity to learn how these professionals built their careers carving out their path to success.

This panel will featureWendy La Rose founder of Challenging the Outcome and culinary graduate ZaKayah Estwick.
These Alumni will share how they have gotten to where they are, what skills they have developed in the workforce and what lies ahead for Black futures.
Moving into Black Futures 2022 and Beyond Closing Ceremony, February 24, 2022, 10:00 A.M. - 11:00 A.M.
This closing ceremony marks the beginning of a new commitment to Black Futures. Office of Anti-Racism, Equity and Human Rights Director Jennifer Grant will share the new opportunities the college will create and continue moving forward.
This event will close with a special keynote address to recognize the dedication to Black futures in the years to come at George Brown College.
