Imminent safety concerns

  • A student is making threats to harm staff, faculty, or other students.
  • A student is threatening to harm themselves.
  • On campus: Call Public Safety and Security at (416) 415-4000 or by pressing “0” on Campus telephones.
  • Off campus or after hours: Call 9-1-1 and send a follow-up email to letstalk@georgebrown.ca.
  • An emergency occurs while a student is on a college-sanctioned study abroad trip or international exchange.
  • Please contact emergency services in your area.
  • Emergency assistance can also be requested via the International SOS app, or locate the appropriate regional International SOS office to contact using this website.

Academic Concerns 
  • A student is considering dropping their program or struggling with their courses due to personal issues. 
  • Refer student to their Academic Program Co-ordinator/Associate Dean for support.
  • Refer student to Counselling for additional supports and appropriate referrals (e.g. Accessible Learning Services (ALS), Office of Anti-Racism, Equity and Human Rights Services (OAREHRS)).
Accessibility Concerns
  • A student who uses a wheelchair finds the campus challenging to navigate.
  • A student needs support requesting a document in an accessible format.
Accommodation Plan
  • A student reports that their professor is not adhering to the accommodations outlined in their accommodation plan from Accessible Learning Services.
Behavioural Concerns
  • A student is suspected of alcohol and substance intoxication.
  • A student is engaging in behaviour which is disruptive to an in-person or online class, and does not respond to support provided or re-direction.
  • Classroom management issues should go to Associate Dean.
  • Contact Public Safety and Security [(416) 415-5000 or by pressing “0” on Campus telephones] for triaging when there is a safety concern or a need for immediate de-escalation. 
  • For all other concerns contact the Office of Student Conduct and Support who will triage student as needed for further supports.
Community Connection and Support Needs
  • An Indigenous student is inquiring about culturally relevant supports
  • A Black international student is new to the country and seeking assistance in finding a part-time job.
  • A student is hoping to connect with their peers through social events or volunteering.
  • A student is a member of the 2SLGBTQIA community and is seeking guidance on available supports/resources on campus.
  • A student is a member of the 2SLGBTQIA community and is seeking guidance on available supports/resources on campus.
  • Suggest the student reach out to one of the following, where appropriate:
    • Black Student Success Network
    • Indigenous Initiatives
    • Peer Mentor Plus
    • Counselling Office
    • Student Association
    • International Student Hub
    • Career Services
    • Student Life
  • Also consider contacting the Student Association for Student Clubs.
  • Community Care Centre (Operated by the Student Association George Brown Polytechnic)
Concerns/complaints about faculty or staff
  • A student finds their professor rude, unhelpful, or unfair.
  • A student disagrees with a professor’s teaching methods

Discrimination or harassment

  • A student faces discrimination or harassment based on race, gender, sexual orientation, age, disability, or other protected grounds*, including derogatory remarks from peers.
Family status accommodations
  • A student is seeking or has been denied accommodations based on family status. For example: a student’s Work-Integrated Learning placement conflicts with their caregiving duties for their children or elderly parents; a student has a baby and is unable to attend class.
Financial Insecurity
  • A student is concerned about their finances.
Food Insecurity
  • A student is experiencing food insecurity.
Housing Insecurity
  • A student fears they will soon be unhoused.
Medical Response Plan
  • A student who has seizures needs to have their emergency plan on file in each building they attend class.
Religious accommodation needs
  • A student is seeking religious accommodations during the exam period.
Serious concerns or complaints about another student
  • A student has vandalized or destroyed another student’s property.
  • A student is filming or photographing another student without their consent.
  • A student is uncomfortable with another student’s behaviour when working together on a group project

Sexual Harassment or Sexual Violence

  • A student discloses they are experiencing sexual harassment or sexual violence.
  • A student is uncomfortable with inappropriate comments a professor made about the student’s body/outfit during class.
  • A student has experienced or witnessed domestic violence or gender-based violence and is struggling with emotional distress.

* Grounds protected under the Ontario Human Rights Code include: citizenship, race, place of origin, ethnic origin, colour, ancestry, disability, age, creed, sex/pregnancy, family status, marital status, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, receipt of public assistance (in housing) and record of offences (in employment).
