George Brown Polytechnic does not support the use of AI detection software as a basis for determining academic misconduct. Current AI detection tools cannot reliably determine whether content was created by a person or generated by AI and may produce false positives or inconsistent results. Their use can also raise concerns related to bias, privacy, transparency, and fairness.
Instead, the TLX encourages approaches that emphasize clear expectations for responsible AI use, thoughtful assessment design, open dialogue with students, and evidence-based academic integrity processes.
Where concerns arise about a student's work, AI detection results should not be treated as evidence of misconduct. Faculty should follow established academic integrity procedures and consider the broader context and available evidence.

When using generative AI tools, faculty should consider what information is being entered, uploaded, or shared with the tool. Personal, confidential, sensitive, student, or institutional information should not be entered into AI tools unless the technology and intended use are appropriate and consistent with George Brown Polytechnic requirements.
Faculty remain responsible for protecting information used in their teaching and professional practice. Before uploading course materials, student information, student work, research materials, or institutional documents to an AI service, consider whether the information contains personal or confidential information and whether the tool is appropriate for that purpose.
