George Brown Polytechnic is located on the traditional territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and other Indigenous peoples who have lived here over time. We are grateful to share this land as treaty people who learn, work and live in the community with each other.
Our Impact
Research and innovation at George Brown Polytechnic are measured by student experience, problem-solving, prototypes, products, community resilience, and economic impact.
Since establishing the Office of Research & Innovation (ORI) in 2007, GBP has attracted over $110 million in research funding, enabled more than 2,100 collaborative projects, and created nearly 20,000 student research experiences that prepare the next generation of innovators and changemakers.
In 2024-2025, 112 researchers worked across 154 projects with 134 industry and community partners, resulting in 257 new or improved products, services, technologies, and prototypes. These numbers reflect work that spans product development, social innovation, and sustainability, three areas where GBP is building lasting capacity with real economic and social value.
For partners, working with GBP means access to a robust ecosystem of expertise, facilities, and funding that de-risks innovation. For students, it means hands-on experience solving real challenges for real organizations. And for communities, it means research designed not just to generate knowledge, but to put it to work.

Plastic Flux
Plastic Flux is a Toronto-based start-up that transforms black plastic waste into beautiful, functional furniture.
“Our business model is to try and divert trash away at the source and keep it out of landfill,” says Mohesan Sreekuladevan, co-founder of Plastic Flux. Mohesan, along with his partner Hanson Wong, came to George Brown’s Product Development Exchange (PDx) to custom-make some of the equipment required to turn trash into treasure.
