Employee Code of Conduct Policies

Employee code of conduct policies define the professional standards, conduct expectations, and workplace responsibilities that apply to employees at George Brown Polytechnic.

This page brings together the three employee code of conduct documents that may be important to review when questions arise about AI use in teaching, learning, administrative work, communication, workplace conduct, online environments, copyright, confidentiality, or the use of institutional resources: the Employee Code of Conduct for Academic Employees, the Employee Code of Conduct for Administrative Employees, and the Employee Code of Conduct for Support Employees. These policies should be read alongside George Brown Polytechnic’s Position on AI and Guiding Principles for AI Use.

Employee Code of Conduct for Academic Employees

The Employee Code of Conduct for Academic Employees outlines the standards of professional conduct expected of faculty. For the purposes of the policy, “academic employees” and “faculty” refer to full-time, partial-load, part-time, and sessional professors, instructors, counsellors, and librarians. The policy describes professional conduct in relation to academic preparation, classroom conduct, relationships with students outside the classroom, and relationships with other faculty and employees.

The policy states that academic employees are expected to do the following:

  • familiarize themselves with relevant George Brown policies,
  • adhere to those policies,
  • assist and encourage others to follow them, and
  • familiarize themselves with relevant provisions related to human rights, discrimination and harassment, intellectual property, academic freedom, and academic dishonesty.

The policy also addresses expectations for the classroom and online environment. Academic employees must apply professional and ethical standards when accessing, using, and distributing information and materials through learning technologies. The policy states that computing and communication facilities and services should be used only for the purposes for which employees are authorized.

This policy is an important reference when academic employees use or plan to use AI in teaching, learning, classroom communication, academic support, course delivery, or work with students. Academic employees should consider course expectations, academic integrity, copyright, professional boundaries, accessibility, and relevant institutional guidance when using AI in academic contexts.

For questions about AI use and employee conduct expectations, academic employees should contact their Chair, Associate Dean, Dean, or direct supervisor, as appropriate.

Employee Code of Conduct for Administrative Employees

The Employee Code of Conduct for Administrative Employees outlines the standards of professional conduct expected of administrative employees. For the purposes of the policy, “administrative staff” and “managers” refer to people who serve as a Dean, Director, Manager, or Chair. The policy describes professional conduct in relation to management, conflict resolution, enactment of institutional priorities, collective agreements, and public relations.

The policy states that administrative employees are expected to:

  • familiarize themselves with relevant George Brown policies
  • adhere to those policies
  • assist and encourage others to follow them, and
  • adhere to relevant provisions related to human rights, discrimination and harassment, intellectual property, academic freedom, and academic dishonesty.

The policy also addresses the online environment and communication facilities. Administrative employees must apply professional and ethical standards when accessing, using, and distributing information and materials through learning technologies. It also states that computing and communication facilities and services should be used only for the purposes for which employees are authorized.

This policy is an important reference when administrative employees use or plan to use AI in leadership, planning, communications, decision-making support, service delivery, or operational work. Employees should consider professionalism, accuracy, confidentiality, copyright, responsible communication, and institutional priorities when using AI in administrative contexts.

For questions about AI use and employee conduct expectations, administrative employees should contact their direct supervisor or manager, as appropriate.

Employee Code of Conduct for Support Employees

The Employee Code of Conduct for Support Employees outlines the standards of professional conduct expected of support employees. The policy describes professional conduct in relation to job performance, workplace conduct, relationships with students, and relationships with faculty, colleagues, administrative employees, and the public.

The policy states that support employees are expected to:

  • familiarize themselves with relevant George Brown policies,
  • adhere to those policies,
  • assist and encourage others to follow them, and
  • familiarize themselves with relevant provisions related to human rights, discrimination, and harassment.

The policy also addresses the online environment and communication facilities. Support employees must apply professional and ethical standards when accessing, using, and distributing information and materials through learning technologies. It states that computing and communication facilities and services should be used only for the purposes for which employees are authorized.

This policy is an important reference when support employees use or plan to use AI in workplace communication, student support, service delivery, administrative workflows, or other assigned duties. Employees should consider professionalism, confidentiality, responsible communication, copyright, and appropriate use of institutional resources when using AI in their work.

For questions about AI use and employee conduct expectations, support employees should contact their direct supervisor or manager, as appropriate.
