George Brown Polytechnic is located on the traditional territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation and other Indigenous peoples who have lived here over time. We are grateful to share this land as treaty people who learn, work and live in the community with each other.
Academic and student conduct policies help define the shared expectations that support a respectful, fair, and accountable learning environment at George Brown Polytechnic.
This page brings together two key policies to review when questions arise about AI use in coursework, assessments, collaboration, communication, or student conduct: the Academic Integrity Policy and the Code of Non-Academic Student Behaviour. These policies should be read alongside George Brown Polytechnic’s Position on AI & Guiding Principles for AI.
Academic Integrity Policy
The Academic Integrity Policy outlines expectations for academic integrity at George Brown. It states that the institution seeks to promote an environment that supports academic integrity with an emphasis on honesty, equity, trust, fairness, respect, and responsibility. It also states that academic integrity applies to all academic endeavours, including teaching, learning, scholarship, and field placement.
The policy identifies student responsibilities in academic work, including submitting original work, citing and referencing sources, respecting the authorship and work of others, following expectations for group work, and asking for clarification when unsure whether an action may be viewed as a breach of academic integrity.
The policy is an important reference when students use or plan to use AI in academic activities. Students should follow course-specific expectations and ask their faculty member or instructor when they are unsure whether AI use is permitted. The policy also outlines forms of breaches of academic integrity, including cheating, plagiarism, fabrication, forging or falsifying documents, impersonation, inappropriate use of digital technology, and copyright-related concerns.
For questions about teaching, learning, assessment design, or academic integrity considerations related to AI, faculty and instructors can reach out to the Teaching and Learning Exchange (TLX) for support.
Code of Non-Academic Student Behaviour
The Code of Non-Academic Student Behaviour outlines expectations for student behaviour and the procedure followed before the institution imposes a sanction. Its purpose is to support a safe and respectful learning community guided by access, diversity, inclusion, mutual respect, and accountability.
The code applies to registered students and accepted applicants. It applies to conduct that takes place on institution-owned or controlled property, relates to institution-sanctioned activity, or engages a legitimate institutional interest, including reputational interests and the institution’s interest in maintaining a safe and harassment-free working and learning environment.
The code identifies student rights and responsibilities, including rights related to safety, security, privacy, fairness, and access to information about policies and expectations. It also includes responsibilities related to harassment, privacy offences, misrepresentation, misuse of property, and policy compliance.
Students should review this code when AI-related activity raises questions about respectful conduct, privacy and consent, misrepresentation, unauthorized use of resources, communication with others, or compliance with institutional policies When in doubt, contact the Office of Student Conduct & Support for information or consultation support.
