George Brown College now offers a new award for students who are the first in their family to attend college, thanks to a US$50,000 donation from the Coca-Cola Foundation announced on Oct. 21, 2015.
"We are honoured to accept this very generous gift from the Coca-Cola Foundation," said Cindy Gouveia, President of the George Brown College Foundation. "Through this donation, first generation learners will have greater accessibility to a quality education and feel empowered by their decision to attend college. It's a huge accomplishment for both the student and their family."
The Coca-Cola Nicola Kettlitz Memorial Award commemorates Nicola Kettlitz, the former President of Coca-Cola Limited, who passed away in March 2015. Nicola worked with the company for 24 years and had a positive impact on the lives he touched and he was a passionate ambassador for people and communities.
"We are delighted to offer George Brown College students a scholarship that reflects Nicola's legacy as an inspirational leader," said John Guarino, President of Coca-Cola Refreshments Canada. "We trust this new award will further empower students to take the lead in the classroom and later in their respective fields and communities."
This award will be given to full-time first generation students who express financial need, demonstrate leadership and community involvement and have a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher.
A total of 20 awards will be distributed in spring 2016 to:
- 10 students at the Centre for Hospitality and Culinary Arts
- 5 students at the Centre for Business
- 5 students at the Centre for Construction and Engineering Technologies
