2016 Letter from the George Brown College Foundation President

Season’s Greetings!

As my second year as president of the George Brown College Foundation comes to a close, I am so pleased with the progress we are able to share with you in this newsletter.

This year I wanted to start by sharing my why – my reason for coming into work every day.

Jessica is why.

I met Jessica Locke at the Chancellor’s Circle event in June 2016 where she shared her story with a room of supporters. When Jessica was in third year at university, she had to make an unthinkable choice. Her father had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Her mother was unable to care for him and also provide for the family. So Jessica dropped out of school and returned home.

This was not the end for this brilliant young woman. Through this heartbreaking experience, she found her calling – caring for others. She enrolled in George Brown’s Practical Nursing program. But caring for her father had taken a toll on her family and there were significant financial barriers standing between her and her dreams.

Thanks to her hard work and the support of donors like you, Jessica received George Brown scholarships. With a steady voice, she shared with the room how much these awards meant to her. They alleviated the financial stress she felt and allowed her to focus on what mattered most – her education.

Jessica will graduate in the Spring of 2017. I have complete confidence she will be an incredible nurse, able to help other families like hers face the unthinkable, with kindness and compassion.

Students like Jessica are my why. This smart, caring young woman represents the best of our community. And better yet, she gives me hope. She and the other bright young people who walk through our college doors every day are Toronto’s future. They will be leaders in health care and construction, in arts and design, in business and hospitality.

This year you helped more students than ever. In this newsletter you will find good news stories that you made possible. These stories highlight the inspirational community leaders, students and partners I am fortunate to work with every day.

I want to take a moment to send a special thank you to all of our generous donors, our tireless Board of Directors, our George Brown colleagues, and of course, the George Brown students and alumni who inspire us every day.

Wishing you and your loved ones a safe and happy holiday season,

Cindy Gouveia
