George Brown College is home to Canada’s first YouTube incubator—one of only nine such spaces in the world—that offers training, networking and production opportunities to people who want to create content for the website’s audience of one billion users.
YouTube Space Toronto launched April 27,
2016 at our St. James Campus, building E at 230 Richmond St. E., adding Toronto to the list of global YouTube creator spaces in Tokyo, Los Angeles, London, Paris, New York, Sao Paulo, Mumbai and Berlin.
George Brown President Anne Sado thanked YouTube for choosing the college as the site of its first Canadian creator space, describing it as a “vote of confidence” in George Brown and in the creativity and talent of Canadians producing online videos.
YouTube space to provide new opportunities for George Brown students
Students from our School of Design helped to design the YouTube Space Toronto facility and Sado said there will be other exciting projects, including collaborations to pilot “leading edge performing arts and media programs.”
“We also foresee our students and staff partnering with YouTube on applied research. For instance, while three-minute videos may be the norm now, perhaps there’s an opportunity for us to collaboratively explore the viability of 3D content in the future,”
“We see the potential for our students to complete field placements at YouTube as well, and to help train YouTube creators in new technologies and techniques.”
Toronto a vibrant YouTube community
Liam Collins, Head of YouTube Spaces Americas, says Canadians are among YouTube’s top creators and describes Toronto as one of the world’s “most vibrant YouTube communities.”
“The YouTube Space Toronto at George Brown College is our latest effort to help support the next generation of artists, musicians and entertainers to learn, connect and create new content,” Collins said. “A YouTube Space is much more than just a facility;
it's a home away from home for creators and an environment for the community to socialize, collaborate and grow together.”
