Building materials supply company, G&L Group, has donated $15,000 towards student scholarships at George Brown College. Faculty and staff joined with members of G&L Group on February 14th to celebrate this generous gift made in honour of Joe Lamanna, the company's Founding Member and President of Aggregates.

Joe Lamanna and his wife Lucy, started G&L in 1970, using a single truck to deliver concrete and stone. Through hard work and excellent customer service, their business prospered. Nearly five decades later, G&L is still a family-owned business and a great Canadian success story that is supplying the materials, manpower and technology needed for building vibrant communities.

At the cheque presentation event, Pat Lamanna, President of Salt, Soil and Waste, and son of Joe Lamanna, President of Aggregates, noted the importance of supporting dedicated and passionate workers in the construction sector. "For the last 47 years, I have seen my mom and dad work tirelessly to create, and build G&L Group. My dad would start at 5 a.m. and work until 10 p.m., six days a week. His dedication to my family, our customers and over 250 employees is evident in all of the work he does. We want to recognize students who share similar values as my dad. We hope to encourage students to continue working hard so that they can give back to our community in the same way, one day."

The G&L Group Scholarship Award in Honour of Joe Lamanna will be awarded to two full-time students each year, for the next three years. Each student will receive a $2,500 scholarship. Every year, one student will be selected from the Construction Engineering Technology program (T105) and another from the Civil Engineering Technology program (T164) or the Honours Bachelor of Technology (Construction Management) program (T312).

In attendance at the event from the G&L Group were Joe and Pat Lamanna; Robert Zanetti, President of Concrete and Stephanie Sinclair, Marketing and Communications Manager at G&L Group. In attendance from George Brown College were Dr. Adel Esayed, Dean of the Centre for Construction & Engineering Technologies; Clint Kissoon, Chair of the Angelo DelZotto School of Construction Management; Cindy Gouveia, President of the George Brown College Foundation; Dario Guescini, Director of Work Integrated Learning and 50th Anniversary Fundraising Committee member and Krisztina Arany, Senior Development Officer at the George Brown College Foundation.

"To have an award that is connected with Joe Lamanna and the G&L Group is an honour for our students. Joe's commitment to his family and business has created a legacy in Toronto that we are excited to celebrate, especially as George Brown turns 50," said Guescini.
