Chef School provides fresh and healthy meals to student food bank

 

Tuition, books, groceries, rent and transit – it all adds up quickly and puts a strain on a tight student budget.  The George Brown Chef School and the Student Association teamed up to ensure students who need help covering food costs can access freshly made meals.

The student food bank at St. James Campus provides meals prepared with healthy and high-quality ingredients, thanks to Chef School students who donate dishes they've made in class.

It's a win-win scenario that enhances food security for our students and reduces food waste at the Chef School.

"All food has value and let's reduce waste as much as possible," said instructor Chef Susie Reading.

"When I introduced it in my lab, there was very little convincing on my part to the students. They embraced it immediately."

At the end of a class, culinary students who want to donate what they've made package up the meals. Then those dishes are transported to the St. James Campus food bank.

"What comes from the culinary school is always top-notch," said Greg Philip of the Student Association Open New Browser Window food bank.

How to access the Student Association food bank

The Student Association runs food banks at Casa Loma, St. James and Waterfront campuses. St. James is the only campus to offer the Chef School meals.

Students can register for the food bank at the following locations:

  • St. James – 200 King St. E., room 159A
  • Casa Loma – E building, room E127
  • Waterfront – Concouse level, room 031
