Open Kitchen Toronto formally launched its Open Kitchen Dinner Series at Ufficio, on the evening of March 5th. The brainchild of restauranteurs Stacey Patterson and Jennifer Coburn, with Chef Ivana Raca, the Open Kitchen Dinner Series is a string of five fundraising events to be held throughout 2018 in celebration of strong women, inclusivity and mentorship in Toronto’s culinary industry.

The proceeds of each Open Kitchen event will go directly to the Open Kitchen Toronto Female Culinary Arts Endowment at George Brown College’s Centre for Hospitality and Culinary Arts. The endowment will fund two $4,500 scholarships annually, for female culinary arts students who demonstrate dedication and passion for the culinary arts and who are in financial need.

In addition to helping students in financial need, the Open Kitchen Toronto Female Culinary Arts Scholarship hopes to encourage an increase in the number of women who manage or own businesses in the industry. The group has structured the scholarships to be available solely to students in the Culinary Management and Culinary Management (Integrated Learning) programs at George Brown College. “We’re hoping to assist women into the industry”, says Stacey Patterson.

Designed to foster camaraderie and professional connections between women in the industry the Series brings together Toronto’s top chefs and restauranteurs  including upcoming events with celebrity chef and George Brown alumna  Lynn Crawford and chef, restauranteur Donna Dooher, who hosts the next event at her restaurant, Mildred’s Kitchen, on April 18.

“The Series is about highlighting strong women and connecting over food and wine and celebrating each other,” says Patterson.

President of the George Brown College Foundation, Cindy Gouveia, outlined the College’s appreciation for Open Kitchen Toronto’s support, saying, “George Brown College is pleased to be part of this initiative and is thankful to Open Kitchen Toronto for this investment in our students and the future of Toronto’s culinary industry.”
